AI Shopping Channels: How Products Get Into ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity

How products get into ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity: the feeds each reads, where the sale closes, what you control, the fees. Check your store free.

Short answer

An AI shopping channel is an assistant that shows products and sometimes sells them: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Perplexity. Each reads product data from a feed or catalog, not from your homepage.

  • For Shopify stores, Shopify Catalog and agentic storefronts send products to ChatGPT and Copilot by default for eligible stores. Google AI Mode and Gemini read through Google Merchant Center, which the Google & YouTube channel can sync for you.
  • Where the sale closes differs. Copilot, AI Mode and Gemini can take the order in the chat through Shopify-powered direct checkout. On ChatGPT, Shopify sends the shopper to your own store checkout. You stay the merchant of record on every channel.
  • Shopify lists no channel fee for ChatGPT, Copilot or Google's direct checkout beyond normal payment processing, and Microsoft says it takes no commission today. Ads are the paid layer, and they sit apart from organic listings.
  • Eligible is not recommended. Once the plumbing works, product data quality decides which store an assistant picks.

The short answer: products get into AI shopping channels through structured product data, not through your website design. Shopify stores reach ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot through Shopify Catalog, on by default for eligible stores. Google AI Mode and Gemini read from Google Merchant Center. Perplexity runs its own merchant program and PayPal checkout. Non-Shopify merchants can feed some of these channels directly, with OpenAI's product feed, Microsoft Merchant Center and Google's Universal Commerce Protocol. Where the sale closes depends on the channel: some take the order inside the chat, ChatGPT hands the shopper to your checkout.

This guide is the map for a merchant deciding where to show up and what to set up. For each channel it covers where the product data comes from, where the sale closes, what you control, and what is documented about cost. Every platform rule here was checked against the vendor's own help pages, developer docs or announcements, listed under Sources. Where a vendor page was unreachable or silent, we say so instead of guessing.

AI shopping channel
An AI assistant or AI search surface that recommends products to shoppers and links to, or completes, the purchase. The main ones in 2026 are ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and the Gemini app, and Perplexity. Each one reads product data from a catalog, a feed or the open web, and each has its own rules for checkout.

What counts as an AI shopping channel?

Think of a channel the way you think of Google Shopping or a marketplace: a place where shoppers find products that you don't control directly, fed by data you do control. What's new is the interface. Instead of a grid of results, the shopper asks a question ("a waterproof hiking boot under $150 for wide feet") and the assistant answers with a few products, a comparison and sometimes a buy button.

Four companies run the channels that matter for most English-language stores in 2026: OpenAI (ChatGPT), Microsoft (Copilot), Google (AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app) and Perplexity. Shopify's agentic storefronts also list Meta surfaces, and Amazon runs its own assistant, Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus), inside its marketplace. This guide covers the four open channels, because those are the ones a store outside Amazon can feed.

Two pieces of vocabulary come up on every channel. A feed or catalog is how the channel learns what you sell. A checkout path is how the sale closes: in the chat, or on your site. Most confusion in 2026 comes from treating these as one decision. They are separate settings, often run by separate companies.

Shopify Catalog
Shopify's structured dataset of products from eligible Shopify stores, which AI channels can search. Shopify describes it as the main way agentic storefronts receive your product data: titles, descriptions, variants, images, prices and availability. Eligible stores are included by default.
Agentic storefronts
Shopify's feature that lets customers discover and buy your products in AI channels, managed under Sales channels → Agentic in the Shopify admin. Shopify's help center lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta surfaces. It is active by default for eligible stores.

How do products get into AI shopping channels?

There are three routes, and most stores use more than one without knowing it.

  1. 01A platform catalog. Shopify Catalog sends eligible products to the channels you have switched on. You don't build a feed. Shopify's agentic storefronts page says the feature is active by default for eligible stores.
  2. 02The channel's own feed. Google Merchant Center, Microsoft Merchant Center, OpenAI's product feed and Perplexity's Merchant Program each accept product data directly. This is the route for stores not on Shopify, and for Shopify stores that want more control over one channel.
  3. 03The open web. Assistants with search features can also find product pages their crawlers have indexed. This route follows your robots.txt and your page markup, not any feed.

The routes fail independently. A store can be ineligible for Shopify Catalog and still appear in ChatGPT through crawled pages, or block a crawler and still be listed through Catalog. Shopify is explicit on this point: blocking crawlers in robots.txt affects only open-web discovery and doesn't stop Shopify Catalog from sending product data to the agentic storefronts you've activated. Our guide to blocking AI crawlers covers that trade-off.

How does selling on ChatGPT work?

Where the data comes from. For a Shopify store, through Shopify Catalog. Shopify's ChatGPT page says you don't need to do anything for products to be discovered by ChatGPT through Catalog, as long as the store meets the conditions: it sells to customers in the United States (it can be based elsewhere), its products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, it has accepted the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms, and its Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy are filled in under Settings → Policies.

Merchants not on Shopify can send a feed to OpenAI directly. OpenAI's commerce docs say product feed onboarding is currently available to approved partners, who apply through a merchant form. The feed is a file or API upload with nine required fields for discovery, from item_id and title to seller_name, availability and price. Our field-by-field walk-through, the OpenAI product feed spec with Shopify mappings, shows which of those a Shopify store already covers through Catalog.

Where the sale closes. On your store. Shopify's ChatGPT page says ChatGPT users complete the purchase on your online store checkout in ChatGPT's in-app browser, and on ChatGPT web it opens in a new tab. There's no direct-checkout toggle for ChatGPT in the Agentic settings, unlike Copilot and Google.

That is a change from 2025. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, which took the order inside ChatGPT, on September 29, 2025, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol it developed with Stripe. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI said the first version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility" it wanted, moved merchants to their own checkout experiences, and refocused on product discovery. TechCrunch's same-day report (trade press) adds that OpenAI told it merchants could still offer Instant Checkout through apps inside ChatGPT for now. So in-chat buying isn't gone everywhere. It just isn't how Shopify merchants sell in ChatGPT. The full timeline is in how buying inside ChatGPT works now.

Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)
OpenAI's specification for sharing product feeds with ChatGPT and, for merchants with checkout enabled, running a checkout session in ChatGPT's interface while payment and order state stay on the merchant's systems. OpenAI's docs say OpenAI is not the merchant of record under ACP.

What you control. Product data, the Catalog access toggle, and your robots.txt for the crawl route. To take ChatGPT out of Shopify Catalog, Shopify's steps are: in Sales channels → Agentic, turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me", click ChatGPT, turn off Shopify Catalog access, and save. Shopify warns it can take up to 7 days for sharing to stop, and products can still appear through crawling.

What it costs. Shopify's ChatGPT page says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT; you pay only your standard payment processing fees. OpenAI's fees for merchants who feed it directly weren't stated on the developer pages we could open.

If your products should be there and aren't, work through why Shopify products don't show in ChatGPT, which orders the ten causes from store-level to product-level.

Where do ChatGPT ads fit?

Ads are a separate, paid layer on top of organic listings. Two things we could verify: OpenAI's product feed spec has an Ads section, with an is_ads_eligible flag that is independent of search eligibility, and OpenAI lists a free-to-install ChatGPT Ads app on the Shopify App Store (listing dated September 3, 2026) that connects an ad account and syncs the Shopify catalog to ChatGPT Ads Manager. Installing the app is free; ad spend is not. OpenAI's ads announcements and help pages returned errors to us, so we don't state pricing models, formats or markets here. ChatGPT ads for ecommerce covers what OpenAI documents.

How does selling on Microsoft Copilot work?

Where the data comes from. For Shopify stores, Shopify Catalog again: Shopify's Copilot page says no action is needed for eligible stores. Copilot's conditions match ChatGPT's: sell to U.S. customers, Catalog-eligible products, the Supplemental Terms, and the three policies completed.

Microsoft adds a second input. Its January 8, 2026 announcement says Microsoft Merchant Center is not required to sell through Copilot Checkout, but that Merchant Center feeds help inform organic Copilot results, so it recommends joining. For a Shopify store, Catalog covers checkout, and a Merchant Center feed is an extra lever for discovery.

Where the sale closes. In the chat. Microsoft announced Copilot Checkout on January 8, 2026, with PayPal, Stripe and Shopify as partners, and its announcement says Shopify merchants are enrolled automatically after an opt-out window and manage it from the Shopify admin. Shopify's help center calls the same thing Copilot's direct checkout: the shopper clicks Buy in the conversation and pays by credit or debit card without visiting your store. If you switch direct checkout off, shoppers are redirected to your store instead.

Not everything can be bought in the chat. Shopify lists subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products as unsupported in direct checkout.

What you control. Two toggles under Sales channels → Agentic → Microsoft Copilot: Shopify Catalog access and Direct checkout. Direct checkout is on by default for eligible stores. A non-Shopify merchant goes through Microsoft Merchant Center instead: Microsoft's agentic commerce page describes adding store settings, adding UCP attributes to the feed, and connecting through PayPal, Shopify or Stripe. It says only English-language merchants selling to U.S. buyers, in USD, are eligible at this time.

What it costs. Shopify says there are no fees for selling in Copilot's direct checkout beyond payment processing. Microsoft's page says that, today, Microsoft does not take a commission or affiliate fee. The merchant stays the merchant of record.

Brand Agents is a different product

Microsoft announced Brand Agents alongside Copilot Checkout on January 8, 2026. It is not a channel: it's an AI shopping assistant that runs on your own storefront, installed through the Microsoft Clarity app and available to Shopify merchants on any plan, not only Plus. Shopify Brand Agents explained covers it. For Copilot Checkout settings, see the Copilot Checkout configuration guide.

How does selling in Google AI Mode and Gemini work?

Where the data comes from. Google Merchant Center. Shopify's Google page says product discovery in AI Mode and Gemini is powered by Merchant Center, and gives two ways in: turn on automatic product and shipping sync in the Google & YouTube sales channel (which can create a Merchant Center account for you), or connect Merchant Center through a third-party feed or manual upload.

Google's conditions are stricter than ChatGPT's and Copilot's on one point. Shopify's page says the store must be based in the U.S. and sell to U.S. customers, with a valid Merchant Center account, Catalog-eligible products, the Supplemental Terms, and the three policies completed. It also asks you to keep product data and policies, including the return policy, matching your online store.

Where the sale closes. In the chat, if direct checkout is on. Shopify says customers can complete purchases in a Shopify-powered direct checkout without leaving the conversation, and that turning it off sends them to your store instead. Direct checkout is on by default for eligible stores.

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
An open standard for agentic commerce, covering discovery through checkout and post-purchase, that lets AI agents talk to a business's commerce backend. Google published it in January 2026, developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. Businesses publish their capabilities in a manifest at /.well-known/ucp, and the business remains the merchant of record.

Shopify does the UCP work for its merchants: its Spring '26 Edition announcement (June 17, 2026) says Shopify merchants are UCP-enabled by default. A merchant on another platform builds it. Google's Merchant Center help says UCP-powered checkout is available to select merchants at this time, for products eligible in the United States, Canada and Australia, and that only listings with the native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) attribute show the Buy button. Google's developer guide adds that an integration must be approved by Google before it goes live in AI Mode and Gemini, and that native checkout needs a Google Pay payment handler and order updates. Google UCP and Merchant Center walks through both paths.

What it costs. Shopify says there are no fees for selling in AI Mode and Gemini's direct checkout beyond standard payment processing. Google's Merchant Center help page on UCP checkout doesn't mention fees.

How does selling on Perplexity work?

Perplexity is the least documented of the four for merchants, so this section is shorter on purpose.

Where the data comes from. Perplexity announced a free Merchant Program in November 2024 for retailers to share product specifications through a signup form, and said its shopping data then came from Shopify-powered businesses that sell and ship to the U.S. Shopify's own Agentic plan page names Perplexity among the AI channels it syncs products to. Shopify's agentic storefronts help page, which covers stores on regular plans, doesn't list Perplexity as of October 2026, so we can't say that standard plans include it through the Agentic settings.

Where the sale closes. On November 25, 2025, Perplexity said its shopping experience was free for all U.S. users and that it had partnered with PayPal for instant checkout inside the conversation, with retailers staying the merchant of record. For products without that option, the shopper goes to the merchant's site.

What it costs. Perplexity described the Merchant Program as free in 2024. It hasn't published merchant fees for PayPal checkout on the pages we opened. How Perplexity ranks products is a separate question, covered in how Perplexity picks products.

Where does the sale close, and who owns the customer?

Two checkout models exist across these channels, and the difference matters more than which logo is on the assistant.

Two ways an AI channel closes the sale
In-chat direct checkoutCopilot, AI Mode, Gemini; Perplexity via PayPalYour own checkoutChatGPT; any channel with direct checkout offVS
On Shopify, Copilot, AI Mode and Gemini default to in-chat checkout; ChatGPT sends the shopper to your checkout.

In-chat direct checkout shortens the path: the shopper never loads your site. The trade is that your storefront pages never load in that flow, and some products (subscriptions, bundles, customizable items on Copilot) can't be bought there at all. Shopify says agents built on UCP apply each merchant's checkout rules, discounts and customizations.

Your own checkout keeps the experience you've built, at the cost of an extra step. That's the ChatGPT model for Shopify stores today.

In both models, every vendor we checked says the merchant stays the merchant of record: Microsoft for Copilot Checkout, Google for UCP checkout, OpenAI for its Agentic Commerce Protocol, Perplexity for its PayPal checkout. Shopify says orders from agentic storefronts show channel or referrer attribution in your admin, and that you keep ownership of the customer relationship. Measuring agentic commerce ROI covers how to report on those orders.

What does a Shopify merchant actually control?

Less than in a classic ad channel, more than most merchants use. Everything lives in one admin page.

  1. 01

    Open the Agentic page

Go to Sales channels → Agentic. An eligible store sees its Shopify Catalog product count; an ineligible one sees an Ineligible warning with reasons.

  2. 02

Decide on "Allow Shopify to manage for me"

It's on by default and activates every channel. Turn it off only if you want to set channels one by one.

  3. 03

    Set each channel

Per channel, choose Shopify Catalog access (discovery) and, for Copilot and Google AI Mode and Gemini, Direct checkout. ChatGPT has no direct-checkout toggle.

  4. 04

    Hide products that shouldn't list

Shopify's way to fully hide a product from AI channels is Unlisted status, which also removes it from sitemaps, search engines and your own store search. Use it sparingly.

  5. 05

    Map your custom data

Shopify Catalog Mapping reads metafields, metaobjects, tag prefixes and title delimiters into what Catalog sends, can group variants into one listing, and lets you choose whether compare-at prices are shared.

  6. 06

    Set up the Google side

Turn on automatic product and shipping sync in the Google & YouTube channel, or connect Merchant Center another way. Without Merchant Center, AI Mode and Gemini have nothing to read.

  7. 07

    Decide on crawlers separately

Your robots.txt governs the open-web route only. Shopify notes robots.txt rules are advisory and not every crawler follows them.

If you're weighing a wider opt-out, should you turn off agentic storefronts? sets out what each switch removes and what keeps running, including the up-to-7-day lag Shopify documents.

Behind the admin sits developer plumbing most merchants never touch. Shopify's agent docs describe UCP-compliant MCP servers that let agents search a Global Catalog across Shopify merchants or a single store's catalog, build carts (Cart MCP), turn carts into checkouts (Checkout MCP) and fetch order status (Order MCP). Shopify says trusted agents can complete checkouts directly, while others hand the buyer to the merchant's storefront to pay.

What changes on Shopify's Agentic plan?

Shopify's Agentic plan is for selling in AI chats without a Shopify online store. Its page says products sync to AI channels (it names ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and the Shop app), that shoppers check out in those conversations through Shopify's checkout, and that you can choose which agentic surfaces get checkout while keeping existing systems such as a PIM, tax engine or order management system. On pricing, the page says only "No monthly fee" and that you pay when products sell. It publishes no rate, so we don't either.

Two help-center details differ from a regular plan: Catalog requirements let Agentic plan merchants qualify without a paid online store, and on the Agentic plan direct checkout is off by default. Shopify's Agentic plan explained covers who it suits and what it leaves out.

What does each AI shopping channel cost?

Organic listing in these channels has no placement fee on any page we checked. The costs are payment processing, the work of keeping data clean, and ads if you buy them.

Free isn't the same as cheap

No channel fee doesn't mean no cost. Every channel ranks on the product data you send, and a thin catalog loses recommendations it was eligible for. That work, not a listing fee, is where the budget goes.

Which route should you use for each channel?

It depends mostly on your platform and size. The table below is the decision we'd make for each common situation, based on what the vendors document.

Getting into a channel puts a product in the pool. It doesn't get it picked. Assistants answer specific questions (fit, material, compatibility, delivery date), and they can only match a product on facts they can read. OpenAI's key-concepts guide notes that rich media and reviews help ranking, relevance and user trust. Shopify recommends complete, well-structured product information in Catalog.

In practice the same fixes help every channel at once, because Catalog, Merchant Center and OpenAI's feed all read the same underlying fields: descriptions that answer shopper questions, named variant options, GTINs where you have them, prices and availability that match checkout, and return and shipping policies that say what you actually do. The catalog enrichment for AI playbook sets the order of that work, and structured data for AI shopping covers the page markup the crawl route reads.

FAQ

How do I sell on ChatGPT as a Shopify merchant?

If your store is eligible, you already can. Shopify says products reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog with no action needed. The store must sell to U.S. customers, have Catalog-eligible products, accept the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms, and complete its Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy. Shoppers check out on your own store, and Shopify charges no ChatGPT fee beyond payment processing.

Can customers buy my products without leaving the AI chat?

On some channels. Shopify's direct checkout lets shoppers buy inside Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode and Gemini, and it's on by default for eligible stores. ChatGPT sends Shopify shoppers to your online store checkout instead. Perplexity offers in-chat checkout through PayPal for participating merchants. You stay the merchant of record in each case.

Do I need Google Merchant Center to appear in Google AI Mode and Gemini?

Yes. Shopify's help center says product discovery in AI Mode and Gemini is powered by Google Merchant Center. The simplest route is the Google & YouTube sales channel with automatic product and shipping sync turned on, which can create a Merchant Center account for you. Shopify's AI Mode and Gemini channel also requires a U.S.-based store.

Do I need Microsoft Merchant Center for Copilot?

Not for checkout. Microsoft says Merchant Center isn't required to sell through Copilot Checkout, and Shopify merchants are enrolled automatically through Shopify Catalog. Microsoft also says Merchant Center feeds help inform organic Copilot results and recommends joining, so a feed is worth adding if you want more control over discovery.

Does blocking AI crawlers remove my products from AI shopping channels?

No, not on its own. Shopify says robots.txt rules affect only open-web discovery and don't stop Shopify Catalog from sending product data to the agentic storefronts you've activated. To stop Catalog sharing, turn off Shopify Catalog access per channel under Sales channels → Agentic. Shopify says sharing can take up to 7 days to stop.

Is Perplexity included in Shopify's agentic storefronts?

Shopify's Agentic plan page lists Perplexity among the AI channels it syncs to. Shopify's agentic storefronts help page for regular plans lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces, but not Perplexity, as of October 2026. Perplexity also runs its own free Merchant Program for retailers who apply.

Do AI shopping channels charge fees?

Shopify lists no fees for selling in ChatGPT, or in Copilot's and Google's direct checkout, beyond standard payment processing. Microsoft says it takes no commission or affiliate fee today. Perplexity called its Merchant Program free. Ads are separate and paid: OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads app is free to install, but ad spend is not.

What is the difference between UCP and ACP?

Both are open protocols that let AI agents work with a merchant's commerce systems. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) was published by Google with Shopify and others and powers checkout in AI Mode and Gemini; Shopify merchants are UCP-enabled by default. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is OpenAI's, built with Stripe, for product feeds and checkout in ChatGPT.
