Instant Checkout Is Gone: How Buying Inside ChatGPT Works Now

OpenAI stepped back from Instant Checkout in March 2026. The timeline, how Shopify orders from ChatGPT close now, and what ACP is for. Check your store's setup.

Short answer

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025: single-item purchases inside ChatGPT, starting with U.S. Etsy sellers, with Shopify merchants "coming soon" and a fee on completed purchases.

  • On March 24, 2026, OpenAI said the first version wasn't flexible enough, let merchants use their own checkout, and refocused on product discovery. Its merchant page now sends shoppers to the merchant's site or app by default, with no fee on those purchases.
  • For Shopify merchants, a ChatGPT sale closes on your own online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. There is no direct-checkout setting for ChatGPT and no ChatGPT fee.
  • In-chat checkout isn't gone everywhere: OpenAI's help center still says some eligible products and merchants may show an Instant Checkout option. But it isn't how Shopify stores sell in ChatGPT, and it isn't something to plan around.

ChatGPT's Instant Checkout, which let shoppers pay without leaving the chat, launched on September 29, 2025. Six months later, on March 24, 2026, OpenAI said that first version didn't give merchants enough flexibility, let them use their own checkout instead, and shifted its effort to product discovery. Today a Shopify merchant's ChatGPT sale closes on the merchant's own checkout, opened inside ChatGPT, and the Agentic Commerce Protocol mostly carries product data rather than payments.

This piece rebuilds the timeline from OpenAI's own announcements and help pages and Shopify's ChatGPT help page, all listed under Sources. We read the openai.com and chatgpt.com pages through a text reader (r.jina.ai), because openai.com refused our direct fetch. Every date and quote below comes from those pages; where they're silent, we say so.

Instant Checkout
OpenAI's in-chat purchase flow, launched September 29, 2025: a shopper taps Buy on an eligible product and confirms shipping and payment inside ChatGPT, while the merchant processes the order and payment on its own systems as merchant of record.
Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)
The open standard OpenAI co-developed with Stripe that powered Instant Checkout. It defines product feeds, checkout sessions and delegated payment tokens. Since March 24, 2026, OpenAI has extended it to product discovery, and it's licensed under Apache 2.0 for any business or AI platform to implement.
Merchant-owned checkout
The model OpenAI moved to in March 2026: shoppers discover and compare products in ChatGPT, then complete the purchase on the merchant's own website or app. For Shopify stores, that's the online store checkout opened in ChatGPT's in-app browser.

What was ChatGPT Instant Checkout?

OpenAI announced it in Buy it in ChatGPT, dated September 29, 2025. U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Free users could buy directly from U.S. Etsy sellers in the chat. OpenAI said over a million Shopify merchants, naming Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx and Vuori, were coming soon. At launch it supported single-item purchases only, with multi-item carts and more merchants and regions promised next.

The mechanics were careful about who owned the sale. The shopper tapped Buy and confirmed order, shipping and payment details without leaving ChatGPT. ChatGPT passed those details to the merchant through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, and the merchant accepted or declined the order, charged the payment with its existing processor and handled fulfillment and support. OpenAI was explicit that it wasn't the merchant of record.

Two commercial details matter for what came later. Merchants paid a fee on completed purchases, though OpenAI's post didn't state the rate. And while OpenAI said Instant Checkout items weren't preferred in results, it listed whether Instant Checkout was enabled as one factor when ranking several merchants selling the same product.

What changed on March 24, 2026?

In Powering product discovery in ChatGPT, dated March 24, 2026, OpenAI announced richer visual shopping results and side-by-side comparison, and extended ACP to product discovery. In the same post it said the initial version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide", and that it was allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while it focused on discovery.

Three other things in that post shape how ChatGPT commerce works now:

  • Shopify is integrated through Shopify Catalog. OpenAI said product data for Shopify merchants is already in ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no additional work required from individual merchants. Shopify's VP of Product, quoted in the post, said buyers complete purchases on the merchant's online store through an in-app browser.
  • ACP became a discovery layer. Merchants share product feeds and promotions through ACP, directly or through third-party providers such as Salesforce and Stripe. OpenAI named Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair as retailers already integrated for discovery.
  • Deeper integrations moved to ChatGPT apps. OpenAI pointed merchants who want native experiences to ChatGPT apps, and announced a Walmart app in ChatGPT with account linking, loyalty and Walmart payments.

What does the timeline look like, source by source?

Most coverage of this change leans on secondhand reporting. Here is what each primary source says, and when. The two OpenAI posts carry dates; the help and merchant pages are living documents, so we give the date we read them.

Is buying inside ChatGPT gone completely?

No, and it's worth being precise, because "Instant Checkout is dead" overstates it. OpenAI's shopping help article still says that for some eligible products and merchants, ChatGPT may show an Instant Checkout option that completes checkout in ChatGPT instead of on the merchant's site. The same page still mentions an "Instant checkout" label in merchant listings. And OpenAI's developer docs still publish the Agentic Checkout Spec and the Delegated Payment Spec.

What has gone is Instant Checkout as the default, standalone path. OpenAI's merchant page says it's moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience, that purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps, and that shoppers go to your site or app by default. OpenAI doesn't document how a merchant would qualify for in-chat checkout today, beyond a feed flag that needs a separately enabled integration.

The accurate one-line version

OpenAI no longer makes in-chat checkout the way merchants sell in ChatGPT, and Shopify stores close ChatGPT sales on their own checkout. OpenAI's help page still allows that some eligible products may show an in-chat option, so don't tell customers or clients it's gone everywhere.

How does a Shopify merchant sell in ChatGPT now?

Through Shopify's agentic storefronts, which are active by default for eligible stores. Shopify's ChatGPT help page and its agentic storefronts overview describe the flow:

  1. 01

Products reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog

No feed, app or application. The store must meet Shopify Catalog's requirements, sell to U.S. customers (it can be based anywhere), have its terms, privacy and refund policies completed, and accept the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms.

  2. 02

A shopper finds and compares products in ChatGPT

ChatGPT picks products using structured metadata, including what Shopify Catalog sends. OpenAI says product results aren't ads and aren't influenced by partnerships.

  3. 03

    The shopper opens your checkout

The purchase happens on your online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab on ChatGPT web. Your branding, checkout customizations and payment methods apply.

  4. 04

The order lands in your admin

Shopify says you keep full ownership of the customer relationship and post-purchase experience, and AI-channel orders show channel or referrer attribution.

Cost: Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT, beyond your normal payment processing. OpenAI's merchant page says there are no fees on purchases made on your site or app. Neither page mentions a setting that buys placement.

Control: there's no ChatGPT direct-checkout setting to turn on or off. You can switch ChatGPT's Shopify Catalog access off under Sales channels → Agentic, and Shopify says data can take up to 7 days to stop flowing. Opting out doesn't hide products that ChatGPT finds by crawling the web. Should you turn off agentic storefronts? weighs that trade.

How does ChatGPT checkout compare with the other AI channels?

ChatGPT is now the outlier among Shopify's agentic storefronts. Shopify's agentic storefronts page describes ChatGPT as mainly a discovery referrer, while Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces can complete purchases in a Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the channel, when direct checkout is on.

What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol for now?

Mostly product data. OpenAI's merchant page says ACP today supports product discovery and more accurate, personalized recommendations through shared product data, and that it will expand toward the full shopping journey over time. The March post lists personalization, local availability and delivery estimates as what ACP should eventually carry.

  • For merchants off Shopify and Etsy: ACP is how you send a direct product feed to ChatGPT, once approved. Our walkthrough of the OpenAI product feed spec, field by field maps each field to Shopify.
  • For Shopify merchants: nothing to implement. Shopify Catalog is your integration, and OpenAI says no additional work is required.
  • For developers and other AI platforms: the checkout and payment specs remain an open standard. The protocol's own site says any AI agent can call an ACP-enabled checkout, merchants can accept or decline per agent or per transaction, and OpenAI was the first platform to implement it.

One practical consequence: if someone is selling you an ACP checkout build so your products can be bought inside ChatGPT, ask what OpenAI has confirmed for your integration. OpenAI's own docs say the checkout flag does nothing until checkout is separately enabled, and its merchant page says shoppers go to merchant checkouts by default.

What should merchants do differently now?

The work moved from "get into in-chat checkout" to "win the recommendation, then convert in a browser you don't control the frame of." For Shopify stores, that means:

  • Make product data win the comparison. ChatGPT's new results put price, reviews and features side by side. OpenAI ranks merchants for the same product on availability, price, quality and whether they're the maker or primary seller. Thin or contradictory data loses that comparison before checkout matters.
  • Keep price and stock identical everywhere. A shopper who sees one price in ChatGPT and another at checkout leaves. OpenAI's help page admits price updates can lag; your job is to make sure your own data never does. When AI shopping quotes the wrong price covers the drill.
  • Test checkout inside the in-app browser. That's where ChatGPT orders now close. Walk through it on a phone, with your express payment methods, discount fields and any checkout apps.
  • Fill in the three policies honestly. ChatGPT via Shopify requires terms of service, privacy and refund policies, and an agent may quote them.
  • Read the channel's numbers. AI-channel orders carry attribution in your admin, so you can see whether ChatGPT referrals convert before deciding anything about opting out.

FAQ

Did OpenAI shut down Instant Checkout?

Not entirely. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI said the first version of Instant Checkout wasn't flexible enough and let merchants use their own checkout. Its merchant page says it's moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout. But OpenAI's help center still says some eligible products and merchants may show an Instant Checkout option, so in-chat checkout isn't gone everywhere.

Can Shopify customers buy inside ChatGPT?

Not inside the chat itself. Shopify's help center says ChatGPT customers complete the purchase on your online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab on ChatGPT web. There's no ChatGPT direct-checkout setting. Your branding, checkout customizations and payment methods apply, and the order appears in your admin with channel attribution.

Does Shopify or OpenAI charge a fee for ChatGPT sales?

Not for Shopify merchants selling through agentic storefronts. Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond standard payment processing, and OpenAI's merchant page says there are no fees for purchases made on the merchant's site or app. The fee OpenAI described in September 2025 applied to completed Instant Checkout purchases.

When did ChatGPT Instant Checkout launch?

OpenAI announced it on September 29, 2025, in its post "Buy it in ChatGPT". It launched for U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Free users buying from U.S. Etsy sellers, supported single-item purchases, and said over a million Shopify merchants were coming soon. It ran on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Stripe.

Do I need to implement the Agentic Commerce Protocol on Shopify?

No. OpenAI says Shopify merchants' product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no additional work required, and Shopify's ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores. ACP matters for merchants on other platforms who want to send a direct product feed, and for developers building agent checkouts.

Why did OpenAI move away from Instant Checkout?

OpenAI's March 24, 2026 post says the initial version didn't offer the flexibility it wanted to give merchants, so it let them use their own checkout experiences and focused on product discovery. It pointed merchants wanting deeper native experiences to ChatGPT apps, such as Walmart's. Neither OpenAI post gives usage or conversion figures for Instant Checkout.

Is ChatGPT different from Copilot and Google AI Mode for checkout?

Yes. Shopify's help center describes ChatGPT as mainly a discovery referrer that sends shoppers to your store checkout. Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces can complete purchases in a Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the channel when direct checkout is turned on. Copilot Checkout is a Microsoft product announced January 8, 2026.
