Can ChatGPT, Copilot and AI Mode list your products?
Shopify shares eligible products with AI channels through Shopify Catalog, and Catalog has rules: a title, an image, a real price, an allowed category, a store that isn't private. ChatGPT adds a few of its own. This checks what anyone can see from outside your store, product by product, and tells you what only your admin can show.
What you'll see
- Whether anything blocks your store from ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot or Google AI Mode
- How many products meet Shopify Catalog's product rules, and which ones don't
- Whether the policy pages ChatGPT requires are published
- Whether robots.txt shuts AI crawlers out of the open web (Shopify Catalog shares products regardless)
- What one product page tells an AI agent: price, availability, brand, GTIN
- What only your Shopify admin can show, and where to look
Method
What it checks, and what it can't
The rules come from Shopify's own Shopify Catalog requirements. Being eligible gets a product listed; whether an assistant recommends it depends on the product data. For that, read every cause of products not showing in ChatGPT or grade a page with the Product Schema Grader.
| Check | We can see it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Store is password-protected | Yes | Catalog excludes stores in private mode |
| Each product: title, image, price above 0 | Yes, from /products.json | Shopify Catalog product rules |
| Each product: likely excluded category | Flagged, not decided | Shopify classifies from product info |
| Terms, privacy and refund policy pages | Yes | ChatGPT requires all three; agents answer returns from them |
| robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot, Googlebot, PerplexityBot | Yes | Costs open-web discovery; Catalog shares products regardless |
| Product structured data: price, availability, brand, GTIN | One product page | What an agent reads on the page |
| Plan, opt-out, US selling, channel publishing, account standing | No | Only your Shopify admin shows these |
FAQ
Questions merchants ask
How do Shopify products get into ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Mode?
- Through Shopify Catalog and agentic storefronts. Eligible products are shared with AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode and Gemini from Sales channels → Agentic in Shopify admin, which is on by default for eligible stores. On ChatGPT the shopper completes the purchase on your store's own checkout; Copilot, AI Mode and Gemini can offer checkout in the channel where Shopify supports it.
Why are my Shopify products not showing in ChatGPT?
- The usual causes, in the order to check: the store is password-protected or on a plan below Starter; agentic storefronts are off or the store has opted out of sharing; the product breaks a Catalog rule (no title, no image, a price of 0, unlisted or hidden from search engines); the product falls in a category Shopify excludes; or, for ChatGPT, the store doesn't sell to the US or is missing its terms, privacy or refund policy. Eligible doesn't mean recommended: that depends on the product data.
What are Shopify Catalog's product rules?
- Shopify's help centre lists them: a title and at least one product image, a price above zero, published to the Online Store, Hydrogen or Headless channel with an identifiable URL, not Unlisted and not hidden from search engines, no sensitive content, and not in an excluded category such as alcohol, tobacco and vaping, CBD, weapons, services and add-ons, event tickets or uncategorized products.
What can't this check see?
- Anything that lives only in your admin: your plan, whether the store is opted out of sharing with AI channels, each product's channel publishing and search-engine visibility, the category Shopify assigns (it classifies from your product information, which can differ from the category you set), and account standing. The result lists where to look for each.
Is the category check exact?
- No. It flags products whose title, type or tags suggest an excluded category, so you know which ones to look at. Shopify makes the call from the product information itself, so a flagged product may be fine and an unflagged one may not be.
Does this work for a store that isn't on Shopify?
- Partly. The robots.txt, policy-page and product-page checks work for any store. The product-by-product rules only apply to Shopify's public product feed. Stores on other platforms reach AI channels through Google Merchant Center, Microsoft Merchant Center or OpenAI's product feed instead.
