Shopify Products Not Showing in ChatGPT? Every Cause, in the Order to Check

Shopify products missing from ChatGPT? Check each cause in order, from plan and channel settings to catalog rules and robots.txt. Run the eligibility check.

Sujan BhuiyanSujan BhuiyanFounder, GigaCommerce · 15 MIN · GUIDE
Short answer

Shopify products reach ChatGPT mainly through Shopify Catalog and agentic storefronts, on by default for eligible stores. If yours are missing, something is failing a rule. Check store-level causes before product-level ones.

  • Store-level blockers: a plan below Starter, private (password) mode, a store flagged ineligible, the ChatGPT channel switched off, no U.S. customers, missing policies under Settings → Policies, or a B2B-only setup.
  • Product-level blockers: no title or image, a price of 0, not published to the Online Store, Hydrogen or Headless, Unlisted status, hidden from search engines, sensitive content, or an excluded category (classified from your product info, not your admin category).
  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt keeps pages out of ChatGPT search but doesn't stop Shopify Catalog sharing your data. And eligible isn't recommended: thin or contradictory product data keeps eligible products from being picked.

If your Shopify products aren't showing in ChatGPT, the cause is usually one of ten things. Check them in this order: plan and private mode, account standing, channel settings, ChatGPT's own conditions, a B2B-only setup, Catalog product rules, excluded categories, robots.txt, data quality, and time. The first seven decide whether a product is eligible. The last three decide whether it gets found and recommended.

This guide is for Shopify merchants who expected their catalog in ChatGPT after Shopify's Spring '26 Edition (June 17, 2026) and can't find it. Every rule is checked against Shopify's help center and OpenAI's crawler documentation, listed under Sources. Where they don't document something, we say so.

Agentic storefronts
Shopify's feature that lets customers discover and buy your products inside AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta surfaces. It is active by default for eligible stores and managed in Sales channels → Agentic. Product data reaches most of these channels through Shopify Catalog. On ChatGPT, the purchase is completed on your own online store checkout.

How do Shopify products get into ChatGPT in the first place?

There are two routes, and they fail for different reasons. The main one is Shopify Catalog, which Shopify calls the primary way agentic storefronts receive your product data: names, descriptions, variants, images, prices and stock status. Shopify's ChatGPT page says products reach ChatGPT through Catalog with no action needed if the store is eligible.

The second route is the open web: ChatGPT's search features can surface pages OpenAI's crawler has indexed. That route is governed by your robots.txt and your product pages, not by Shopify's eligibility rules.

So a store can fail Catalog eligibility and still have pages show up through crawling, or the reverse. And the sale doesn't close in the chat: ChatGPT customers check out on your online store, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab, and there's no direct-checkout setting for ChatGPT. A missing "buy in ChatGPT" button isn't a bug. The agentic commerce on Shopify guide maps where the sale closes on each channel.

The 10-minute triage

Most stores find the cause in the first three steps. If you'd rather start from outside the admin, the free AI Channel Eligibility Check reads the public signals (product rules from /products.json, robots.txt, policy pages, product structured data) and lists the checks that only your admin can show.

  1. 01

    Open the Agentic page

In the Shopify admin, go to Sales channels → Agentic. Under Sources → Shopify Catalog, an eligible store sees a product count. An ineligible store sees an "Ineligible" warning with reasons. That one screen answers causes 1 to 3 for most stores.

  2. 02

    Check the ChatGPT toggle

If "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is off, click ChatGPT and confirm Shopify Catalog access is on.

  3. 03

    Confirm the store is public

Open your storefront in a private browser window. A password page means private mode.

  4. 04

    Check your policies

Go to Settings → Policies and confirm the Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy are filled in. ChatGPT requires all three.

  5. 05

    Test one missing product

Open it in Products. Confirm a title, an image, a price above 0, a status other than Unlisted, and Online Store publishing.

  6. 06

    Read your live robots.txt

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and search for OAI-SearchBot. A Disallow: / under that user-agent closes the open-web route.

  7. 07

    Search like a shopper

Try a shopper's query in the Agentic page's search preview. If the product ranks there but not in ChatGPT, skip to causes 9 and 10.

Every cause, where to check it, and what a public scan can see (admin paths as of October 2026).

1. Is my store on the right plan, and is it public?

Why it blocks you. Shopify Catalog's requirements say the store must be on the Starter plan or higher and can't be in private mode. Development stores are excluded too. (Agentic plan stores follow separate setup rules.)

How to check. Look at your plan in the admin's Settings. A store in private mode shows a Private label under Online Store.

How to fix. Move to Starter or higher if you're below it. To go public, go to Online Store, click the Private label, select Public, then click Update. A development store needs to switch to a paid plan.

2. Has Shopify marked my store ineligible?

Why it blocks you. Shopify reviews eligibility over time, and a store can lose it if it stops meeting the requirements: Shopify's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy, account security, and a real operating history. A locked store, or one with restricted access, can't be included.

How to check. Go to Sales channels → Agentic, then Sources → Shopify Catalog. Ineligibility reasons are listed there. If you see "Catalog eligibility details are temporarily unavailable", Shopify's advice is to check back later or contact Support.

How to fix. Work through the reasons shown. For security, Shopify asks you to verify your email, turn on two-step authentication, add a passkey if available, and complete identity and business verification. For history, it wants genuine sales, prompt fulfillment, a low chargeback rate, invoices paid on time, and open compliance issues resolved. A brand-new store may not have the history yet. For a locked or restricted store, contact Shopify Support.

3. Is the ChatGPT channel switched off, or have I opted out?

Why it blocks you. "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is on by default and activates every channel. If someone turned it off, they may also have switched off ChatGPT's Catalog access. Separately, a store can be opted out of sharing products with AI channels entirely, which Shopify says is distinct from the Catalog access setting. Agentic storefronts also require accepting the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.

How to check. In Sales channels → Agentic, see whether "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is on. If it's off, click ChatGPT and look at Shopify Catalog access.

How to fix. Turn Catalog access for ChatGPT back on and save, or turn "Allow Shopify to manage for me" back on, which reactivates all agentic storefronts settings. If the store is opted out of sharing with AI channels, Shopify's instruction is to contact Support. Expect a lag: Shopify says data can take up to 7 days to stop being shared after you turn access off, so don't judge a re-enable on day one either.

4. Does my store meet ChatGPT's own conditions?

Why it blocks you. Shopify's ChatGPT page adds conditions on top of Catalog eligibility: the store must sell to customers in the United States (it can be based anywhere), and the Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy must be completed under Settings → Policies. Products covered by OpenAI's prohibited products and services don't appear in ChatGPT results either.

How to check. Open Settings → Policies and read all three. A blank field fails. A boilerplate template with a return window you don't honor passes but gives an agent a wrong fact to quote. Then confirm you sell and ship to the United States.

How to fix. Fill in all three with the terms you actually operate, and keep the Knowledge Base app's answers consistent with them (Shopify Knowledge Base training covers how). Shopify's ChatGPT page also says to put required legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of each product description.

5. Is my store set up as B2B-only?

Why it blocks you. Agentic storefronts support only direct-to-consumer sales. A B2B-only store is ineligible, and B2B-only products are excluded when Shopify can identify them through B2B catalogs, customer account requirements, or password-protected storefronts.

How to check. In your online store preferences, see whether the B2B-only option is on. If you sell to both businesses and consumers, check which catalog each missing product belongs to.

How to fix. Turn off B2B-only if you sell D2C as well. A product sold to both audiences appears at its D2C price. The reverse also happens: wholesale setups built with third-party apps may not be detected, so wholesale-only products can leak into AI channels.

6. Does this product break one of Shopify Catalog's product rules?

Once the store passes, move to individual products. A product has to meet every one of Shopify Catalog's rules:

  • A title and at least one product image.
  • A price above 0. Shopify is blunt about it: free products aren't included in Shopify Catalog.
  • Published to the Online Store, Hydrogen, or Headless channel (Hydrogen and Headless need the route format Shopify documents).
  • Published with an identifiable product URL.
  • Not set to Unlisted status.
  • Not hidden from search engines.
  • No sensitive content, such as mature content, and not in an excluded category (cause 7).

How to check. Open the missing product in Products and check status, media, price and sales channels. The two quiet failures are Unlisted status and search-engine hiding, and Shopify's help center confirms both remove a product from Shopify Catalog. Search-engine hiding is usually the seo.hidden metafield: go to Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Products, look for a seo.hidden definition, then check the product's Metafields section for a value of 1. If a third-party app owns the field, you can't edit it in the admin.

How to fix. Add an image, set a real price, publish to the Online Store, and change Unlisted to Active if the product should be sold. Clear seo.hidden if nobody set it on purpose, or change the setting in the app that owns it. Look for patterns: a whole collection missing usually traces to one bulk import that left prices at 0 or skipped the Online Store channel.

Unlisted is a blunt tool

Unlisted is Shopify's way to hide a product from AI channels, but it also removes the product from sitemaps, Google, and your own store search. If a product vanished after someone "hid it", check for Unlisted.

7. Is the product in a category Shopify excludes?

Why it blocks you. Some categories never enter Shopify Catalog, and an exclusion covers every subcategory. Shopify's list as of October 2026 (it can change at Shopify's discretion):

  • Alcohol; tobacco and vaping; drugs and smoking accessories (including CBD supplements).
  • Prescription and medical products; sexual health and wellness; adult and mature content.
  • Weapons and ammunition; recreational and imitation weapons (hunting gear, archery, airsoft, toy weapons); explosives such as fireworks.
  • Science and laboratory products and hazardous materials (fuels, pesticides, firewood).
  • Money-related products (bullion, collectible coins, virtual currency) and prop money.
  • Services and add-ons: warranties, installation, maintenance plans, subscriptions, finance and insurance.
  • Event tickets, live animals, and products classified as uncategorized.

The classification trap. Shopify classifies products from your product information, not from the category you set in the admin, and the two can differ. A vague title or a two-line description gives the classifier little to go on, and "uncategorized" is itself excluded. A product can also be excluded for sensitive content in its images or description, even in an allowed category.

How to check. There's no public view of Shopify's classification. Compare missing products with ones that appear. If the missing ones share a vocabulary, an image style, or very short descriptions, that's your lead.

How to fix. A product that genuinely belongs to an excluded category can't be listed. If it's misclassified, rewrite the title and description to say plainly what it is, what it's made of and what it's for. Complete, accurate product information is the lever Shopify names for correct classification.

8. Is my robots.txt blocking OAI-SearchBot?

Why it matters, and why it doesn't. This cause only affects the open-web route. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and sites that opt out of it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers (they can still appear as navigational links). GPTBot gathers content that may train OpenAI's models, so blocking it is a training decision, not a search one. ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages on request, isn't used to decide what appears in search.

Shopify adds the other half: blocking AI crawlers affects only open-web discoverability and doesn't stop Shopify Catalog from sharing your product data. So a blocked OAI-SearchBot won't explain a product missing from the Catalog route. It will explain why your pages never show up as ChatGPT search results.

How to check. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt on your primary domain. Look for User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Disallow: /, or a catch-all User-agent: * block that disallows product paths. Shopify's default file allows public content, so a block like this came from a custom robots.txt.liquid template or an app. Check your CDN or proxy too, because a network-level bot block never shows up in robots.txt.

How to fix. Go to Online Store, open the theme's ⋯ menu, select Edit code, and edit robots.txt.liquid. Remove the rule blocking OAI-SearchBot and keep the default transactional disallows. Shopify calls this an unsupported customization and warns that mistakes can cost all your search traffic, so change one rule at a time. OpenAI says its systems can take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt update. Our guide to blocking AI crawlers covers the full allow-list decision.

9. The product is eligible. Why does ChatGPT still not recommend it?

Eligibility gets a product into the pool. It doesn't get it chosen. When the item is counted on the Agentic page but ChatGPT never names it, the usual cause is data too thin, or too contradictory, to match a shopper's request. Shopify's optimization guidance lists what's considered: titles and descriptions, images, variants with option names, barcodes (GTIN, UPC, ISBN), and type, vendor, collections and tags. Each AI platform applies its own factors on top.

How to check. Each product on the Agentic page has a listing quality meter, broken down into description completeness, image coverage, verified reviews, variant and option completeness, and shop policy completeness. Products that didn't rank get an "Improve your listing" section. Shopify notes agentic storefronts often re-rank results, so treat the search preview as directional. Outside the admin, check the product page's structured data. The free Product Schema Grader shows which fields agents read are missing or wrong.

How to fix. Start with the products you most want recommended. Answer shoppers' questions in the description (material, size, fit, compatibility, who it's for), name every variant option, add GTINs, and make structured-data price and availability match checkout. When AI shopping quotes the wrong price walks through that drill. If your data lives in metafields, Shopify's Catalog Mapping can pull it into what Catalog sends. The catalog enrichment for AI playbook sets the order of work for a full catalog.

10. Have I given it enough time, and am I testing it the right way?

What to expect. No setting guarantees placement. Shopify charges no ChatGPT-specific fee, and nothing in the agentic storefronts settings buys a ranking. Shopify doesn't publish how long a newly eligible product takes to first appear. It says Catalog updates continuously, and OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours. Treat any "live in 48 hours" promise as unsourced.

How to test. Searching your exact product name only tells you whether ChatGPT can find a page, not whether it will recommend you to a stranger. Ask the way a shopper would, with a use case, a budget, a size. Run the same prompts in the Agentic page's search preview, use a fresh conversation each time, and keep a dated log so you can tell a real change from day-to-day variation.

When to escalate. If the store is eligible, the product meets every rule, and it still never appears after several weeks of testing, contact Shopify Support with product IDs and Agentic page screenshots.

FAQ

Do I need to install a ChatGPT app on Shopify to appear in ChatGPT?

No. Shopify says the ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores, and products reach it through Shopify Catalog with no action needed. You manage it in Sales channels → Agentic. You do need eligible products, the three policies under Settings → Policies, U.S. customers, and the Supplemental Terms accepted.

Can customers buy my products inside ChatGPT?

Not inside the chat. Shopify's help center says ChatGPT customers complete the purchase on your online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or in a new browser tab. There's no direct-checkout setting for ChatGPT. Your branding, checkout customizations and payment methods all apply, and the order shows channel attribution in your admin.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my products from ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI's documentation says GPTBot gathers content that may be used to train its models, while OAI-SearchBot decides what can appear in ChatGPT search. Shopify adds that robots.txt rules only affect open-web discovery and don't stop Shopify Catalog from sharing your product data. Block GPTBot if you object to training. Leave OAI-SearchBot allowed if you want to be found.

Why are some of my products in ChatGPT but not others?

Store-level problems remove everything, so a partial gap points to product-level causes. Check the missing ones for a price of 0, no image, Unlisted status, the seo.hidden metafield, or no Online Store publishing. Then check excluded categories, remembering Shopify classifies from your product info, not your admin category. If none apply, compare listing quality on the Agentic page.

How long does it take for Shopify products to show up in ChatGPT?

Shopify doesn't publish a timeline for a newly eligible product's first appearance. It says Catalog updates product data continuously and that switching access off can take up to 7 days to take effect. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours. Even then, eligibility isn't placement, so test with shopper-style prompts over several weeks.

Does this checklist also apply to Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode?

Mostly. The Catalog rules in causes 1, 2 and 5 to 7 feed every agentic storefront. AI Mode and Gemini can also get products through the Google & YouTube channel. Copilot Checkout and Brand Agents are Microsoft products announced January 8, 2026, with their own settings. Causes 4 and 8 are ChatGPT-specific, and cause 3 has a toggle per channel.
