Shopify ships Brand Agents and Copilot Checkout in the Spring '26 edition

Shopify's Spring '26 edition introduced Brand Agents — a merchant-controlled AI shopping assistant — alongside Copilot Checkout, an AI-assisted in-conversation checkout flow. Both are Shopify products, and both launched available to Shopify Plus merchants only.

What it means for you

It moved agentic commerce from something merchants read about to something they can configure. The Plus-only gate is the practical catch: merchants on lower plans need a plan for when it opens up rather than a migration scramble, and Plus merchants now have a Brand Agent whether or not anyone has authored what it should say.

What to do

If you're on Plus, audit what your Brand Agent currently tells shoppers before deciding whether to invest in it — an unconfigured agent answers from whatever your catalog happens to contain. If you're not on Plus, this is a planning item, not an urgent one.

Dates are when the platform shipped something, not when we noticed it. The impact label is deliberately conservative: most platform changes need no action from a mid-market merchant, and saying so is what makes the ones that do need action believable.

We started tracking on June 17, 2026and haven't backfilled earlier changes. A short accurate timeline is worth more than a long reconstructed one — and backfilling from memory is how changelogs quietly become fiction.
