Google UCP and Merchant Center: Getting Checkout in AI Mode and Gemini

How Google's Universal Commerce Protocol puts a Buy button in AI Mode and Gemini, what Merchant Center needs, and the Shopify route. Run the eligibility check.

Short answer

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open-source standard for agentic commerce that Google announced on January 11, 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. Google's first implementation is a checkout inside AI Mode in Search and Gemini, paid with Google Pay.

  • With UCP checkout the sale happens on Google's surface, not your site, and you stay the merchant of record. That's different from Google's older checkout button and its agentic checkout, which both complete the purchase on your website.
  • Shopify merchants don't build anything: Shopify's agentic storefronts provide a Shopify-powered direct checkout in AI Mode and Gemini, on by default for eligible stores. It needs a US-based store selling to US customers, a valid Merchant Center account with synced products, Catalog-eligible products and the three store policies.
  • Other merchants integrate UCP themselves, get selected through Google's interest form, and onboard through the UCP integration hub in Merchant Center. Google calls the checkout feature available to select merchants through an early access program, rolling out in phases.

Short answer: to get a Buy button on your products in Google AI Mode and Gemini, you need your products in Google Merchant Center and a checkout that speaks the Universal Commerce Protocol. If you're on Shopify, Shopify provides that checkout through its agentic storefronts, and for eligible US stores it's on by default. If you're not, you build the UCP integration yourself (or through a platform that offers one), apply through Google's interest form, and onboard in Merchant Center once Google selects you.

This guide is for merchants and the agencies who run their Merchant Center accounts. Every rule comes from Google's and Shopify's own documentation, listed under Sources. Where they don't document something, we say so. For how Google fits next to ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity, start with the AI shopping channels guide.

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
An open-source standard for agentic commerce that gives AI agents, businesses and payment providers a shared way to handle discovery, checkout and post-purchase steps. Google announced it on January 11, 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. It works over REST APIs, the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent2Agent (A2A), and is compatible with the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).

What is the Universal Commerce Protocol, and who built it?

Google's engineering write-up describes UCP as an open-source standard for the whole commerce journey, from discovery through purchase and order management. A business publishes the capabilities it supports (checkout, discounts, fulfillment, identity linking, order management) in a JSON profile at /.well-known/ucp, and an agent reads that profile to work out what it can do with that store.

Google built it with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, and more than 20 other companies endorsed it at launch, including Adyen, American Express, Best Buy, Flipkart, Macy's, Mastercard, Stripe, The Home Depot, Visa and Zalando. Shopify's own UCP page puts it as "co-developed with Google, open to everyone", and Shopify uses UCP in its own Catalog and Checkout MCP servers.

Two design choices matter to merchants. Payment instruments (what the shopper pays with) are separate from payment handlers (who processes it), so a store can keep its processor; Google's sample profile lists Shop Pay and Google Pay. And the business stays the merchant of record and keeps its own business logic. UCP is a protocol, not a marketplace.

Which Google checkout is which?

Google now has three features that all get called "checkout", and the difference decides where your sale closes. Google's Merchant Center article on UCP separates them: with the existing checkout button the transaction occurs on your site; Google's agentic checkout buys on the customer's behalf directly on your website; and with UCP-powered checkout the purchase happens on Google's surfaces while you remain the merchant of record.

Google's three checkout features, as documented in October 2026.

Agentic checkout is the price-tracking feature: when a tracked item fits the shopper's budget, Google offers to buy it on the merchant's site. UCP checkout, the subject of this guide, puts a Buy button inside AI Mode or Gemini, and the shopper never loads your storefront.

What does a merchant need for UCP checkout in AI Mode and Gemini?

Google's requirements, from its Merchant Center help and developer guide:

  • An active Merchant Center account with eligible products. Your Shopping feeds power discovery; configure shipping, returns and the feed first.
  • Products eligible in the United States, Canada or Australia. Google's help article applies to those three countries. The onboarding hub itself is rolling out gradually in the US, with Australia and Canada scheduled for next year.
  • A UCP implementation. Google's guide asks you to publish a UCP profile, secure your endpoints, and implement native checkout, which requires the Google Pay payment handler and order lifecycle updates so Google gets post-purchase status.
  • A Google Pay & Wallet Console account. A payment provider not yet on the Google Pay API can onboard through Google's developer steps; processing without a provider needs encryption setup and PCI documentation.
  • The `native_commerce` attribute. Only listings with checkout_eligibility set to true show the Buy button. It's optional, and empty counts as false.
  • Google's approval. The guide says your integration must be approved by Google before you can go live on AI Mode and Gemini.
native_commerce attribute
A Merchant Center product attribute with one boolean sub-attribute, checkout_eligibility. Setting it to true opts an eligible listing into Google's "Buy" flow (native checkout) on surfaces such as AI Mode and Gemini. False or empty leaves it a standard listing. Google recommends adding it through a supplemental feed so the primary feed stays unchanged.

On payments, Google's help says the feature currently uses standard card numbers (FPANs) stored in Google Wallet. PayPal support was announced as "coming soon" in January 2026, and we haven't found a Google page confirming it has launched.

How do Shopify merchants get checkout in AI Mode and Gemini?

Through agentic storefronts, with no UCP build of their own. Shopify announced on January 11, 2026 that UCP would power a new integration letting Shopify merchants sell directly in AI Mode and Gemini, managed from the Shopify admin. Its Spring '26 Edition (June 17, 2026) says UCP and Shopify Catalog are both enabled by default for Shopify merchants. The setup itself is documented on Shopify's Selling on Google AI Mode and Gemini page, which doesn't use the term UCP. It calls the result a Shopify-powered direct checkout.

Shopify's requirements for that channel:

  • The store is based in the US and sells to US customers. That's stricter than ChatGPT, where the store can be based anywhere as long as it sells to the US.
  • A valid Google Merchant Center account that meets Google's requirements. Installing Shopify's Google & YouTube channel creates one if you don't have it.
  • Products reach Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube channel with product and shipping sync on, or through a third-party feed provider or manual upload.
  • Products are eligible for Shopify Catalog (Starter plan or higher, not in private mode, plus Catalog's product rules).
  • The Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service are accepted.
  • Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy are completed under Settings → Policies.

Discovery runs on Merchant Center, not Shopify Catalog, so disapproved items or stale shipping data hurt you here even when Catalog is healthy. Checkout runs on Shopify: the shopper clicks Buy, enters shipping and payment details, and clicks Pay now without leaving the chat. Only US-based shoppers see it; others are sent to your online store.

  1. 01

    Get products into Merchant Center

Install or open the Google & YouTube channel and turn on Automatically sync products and Automatically sync shipping information in the Product feed section. If a feed app or manual upload already supplies Merchant Center, Shopify says no extra setup is needed.

  2. 02

    Clear Merchant Center issues

Fix disapprovals and account warnings in Merchant Center first. Google asks UCP merchants to keep feed data and brand assets as complete and current as possible.

  3. 03

    Complete the three policies

Fill in Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy under Settings → Policies with the terms you actually operate.

  4. 04

    Check the Agentic page

Go to Sales channels → Agentic. With Allow Shopify to manage for me on, direct checkout is active for eligible channels. If it's off, click Google AI Mode and Gemini and confirm Direct checkout is on.

  5. 05

    Move legal disclosures up

Shopify asks for required legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of each product description.

Rolling out, not universal

Shopify's Google page says the channel is rolling out to eligible stores and that direct checkout "might not yet be available in your store". Shopify's March 24, 2026 announcement said select brands had started selling in AI Mode and Gemini. Google's October 15, 2026 Universal Cart post lists "many Shopify merchants" among the stores offering simplified checkout. Neither company publishes a date when every eligible store gets it.

What changes when checkout happens on Google instead of your site?

You stay the merchant of record and orders land in your Shopify admin, but the checkout isn't your checkout. Shopify lists what direct checkout in AI Mode and Gemini doesn't support:

  • Products: subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products.
  • Delivery: local delivery, pickup in store and pickup points.
  • Tracking: Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire. Only server-to-server pixels (checkout started and completed) do, so expect gaps in your usual attribution reports.
  • Accounts: you can't require customers to sign in before checkout, and only some accelerated checkout options work.
  • Checkout blocks: only blocks with checkout blocking enabled can load, and many types never appear, including those that change items or quantities, loyalty programs, address autocomplete, consent collection and chat.

Shopify Functions for shipping, discounts and cart and checkout validation are supported, as are automatic discounts and discount codes. Shopify says there are no fees beyond your standard payment processing fees. On data, Shopify's privacy page says channels with direct checkout, Google AI Mode and Gemini included, receive the customer's name, email, phone number and address for the order.

If those trade-offs don't suit you, keep discovery and send buyers to your own store. The guide to turning off agentic storefronts covers what each setting removes and keeps.

How do non-Shopify merchants get UCP checkout?

They integrate UCP themselves and apply. The Merchant Center onboarding article sets the order: complete the technical implementation in Google's UCP developer guide first, then submit the UCP integration interest form, then wait. Google selects participants and notifies them, and only then does the onboarding experience appear in Merchant Center.

UCP integration hub
The onboarding area in Google Merchant Center where selected merchants choose which UCP capabilities to offer (cart transfer to their site, native checkout on Google, identity linking) and validate their UCP profile and APIs in a sandbox before going live.
  1. 01

    Prepare Merchant Center

Configure shipping, returns and the product feed, and clear account and item issues.

  2. 02

    Choose your capabilities

Native checkout completes the purchase on Google and requires the Google Pay handler and order lifecycle updates. The cart path transfers the shopper's cart to your website instead. Identity linking and promo codes are optional extensions.

  3. 03

Build and host your UCP profile

Publish the profile at /.well-known/ucp, declare payment handlers and public keys, secure your endpoints, and set up Google Pay & Wallet Console.

  4. 04

    Apply and wait for selection

Submit the interest form. Google notifies selected merchants and opens the hub in their Merchant Center account.

  5. 05

    Validate and go live

Test the profile, cart transfer and checkout in the hub's sandbox, mark products with native_commerce, and go live once Google approves the integration.

If you sell through a commerce platform other than Shopify, Google tells you to ask that provider about its UCP plans. Google runs an early pilot in which selected platforms host each merchant's UCP profile and checkout endpoints and onboard merchants in a few clicks, but its documentation doesn't name the platforms in it. Brands that want Shopify's checkout without moving their store can look at the Shopify Agentic plan. Shopify's help center notes direct checkout is off by default on that plan.

Is UCP checkout live, and where?

Partly, and the status depends on whose page you read. Google's Merchant Center article says the UCP checkout feature is available to select merchants, runs through an early access program, and will be available in phases. Neither Google nor Shopify labels it beta or generally available, so we don't either.

  • January 11, 2026: UCP announced. Google said checkout would start with eligible US retailers, with PayPal coming soon and global expansion planned.
  • March 19, 2026: optional Cart, Catalog and Identity Linking capabilities added, with Commerce Inc, Salesforce and Stripe named as upcoming implementers.
  • May 19, 2026: Google said UCP-powered checkout would expand to Canada and Australia in the coming months, and later to the UK.
  • September 16, 2026: Google said UCP "already enables direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers across Google", and added cart transfer and checkout flow testing to the integration hub, rolling out in the US first.
  • October 15, 2026: Universal Cart launched in the US across Search and the Gemini app, with checkout through Google Pay or transfer to the merchant's own cart.

For a US Shopify merchant, the work is Merchant Center hygiene, not engineering. Off Shopify, budget for a real integration and an application queue, and keep improving the feed meanwhile, because Merchant Center data powers discovery either way. Agencies should check each store separately: eligibility is per store.

What should you fix first?

Start with Merchant Center, since every route reads it. Clear disapprovals, match shipping and return settings to what you actually do, and make feed prices and availability match checkout. When AI shopping quotes the wrong price walks through that check.

Then check Shopify's store-level gates: the three policies, Catalog eligibility and US selling. ChatGPT works differently, with buyers sent to your own checkout; the Instant Checkout explainer covers it, and this troubleshooting guide helps if your products aren't showing there.

FAQ

What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?

UCP is an open-source standard for agentic commerce that Google announced on January 11, 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. It gives AI agents, merchants and payment providers a shared way to handle discovery, checkout and order updates over REST, MCP or A2A. Google's first use is a checkout inside AI Mode in Search and Gemini.

Do Shopify merchants need to build a UCP integration?

No. Shopify provides a Shopify-powered direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini through agentic storefronts, on by default for eligible stores. You need a US-based store selling to US customers, a valid Merchant Center account with products synced, Catalog-eligible products, the Supplemental Terms accepted, and the three policies completed. Shopify says it's still rolling out.

Where does the purchase happen with UCP checkout?

On Google's surface. Google's Merchant Center help says the checkout happens directly on Google while you remain the merchant of record, unlike its existing checkout button, where the transaction occurs on your site. Shoppers pay with Google Pay using cards and shipping details saved in Google Wallet. Orders from Shopify's version land in your Shopify admin.

Which countries does UCP checkout cover?

Google's help article applies to products eligible in the United States, Canada and Australia, but the Merchant Center onboarding hub is rolling out in the US first, with Australia and Canada scheduled for next year. Google has said the UK will follow later. Shopify's Google channel currently requires a US-based store, and direct checkout shows only to US shoppers.

What is the native_commerce attribute in Merchant Center?

It's an optional product attribute with one boolean field, checkout_eligibility. Setting it to true opts an eligible listing into Google's Buy flow on surfaces such as AI Mode and Gemini. False or empty keeps it a standard listing. Google recommends adding it with a supplemental feed. You still need an approved UCP integration for the button to work.

Is UCP checkout in beta or generally available?

Google doesn't use either label. Its Merchant Center help says the checkout feature is available to select merchants through an early access program and will roll out in phases. Shopify says its Google channel and direct checkout are rolling out to eligible stores and may not be available in yours yet. Check your Agentic page or Merchant Center for actual status.

Can I keep my products in AI Mode but send buyers to my own checkout?

Yes. On Shopify, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me under Sales channels → Agentic, click Google AI Mode and Gemini, deactivate Direct checkout and save. Products stay discoverable through Merchant Center, and shoppers are redirected to your online store to buy. Outside Shopify, Google's cart transfer capability sends the shopper's cart to your site.

Does Google charge fees for UCP checkout?

Google's UCP pages we read don't list a fee. Shopify says direct checkout in AI Mode and Gemini carries no fees beyond your standard payment processing fees. Shopify's Supplemental Terms do reserve the right to charge Agentic Storefronts Fees on some channels, so recheck the terms and your admin before assuming that stays true.
