Shopify's Agentic Plan: Who It's For and What It Leaves Out

Shopify's Agentic plan puts products from a non-Shopify store into ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini. Who it suits, what's missing, how checkout works. Score yours.

Short answer

Shopify's Agentic plan is for merchants who don't use Shopify as their ecommerce platform. It adds your products to Shopify Catalog and agentic storefronts so AI channels can show them, while you keep your existing site and checkout.

  • Shopify's plan page says there's no monthly fee, with card rates from 2.9% + 30¢ USD online. The Help Center ties payment fees to purchases in a Shopify-powered direct checkout. Paid apps and services cost extra.
  • Checkout depends on the channel. ChatGPT sends shoppers to your existing store's checkout. Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta can use Shopify's direct checkout, which is off by default on this plan and needs payments, shipping and taxes set up in Shopify.
  • What it leaves out: a published Shopify online store and its checkout, Shopify Messaging, gift card sales, manual orders, Shop post-purchase offers, Oxygen hosting, and ChatGPT order history inside Shopify.
  • Already on a paid Shopify plan? You don't need it, because agentic storefronts are built in. If you start on the Agentic plan and later upgrade, your products and agentic storefronts setup carry over.

Short answer: the Shopify Agentic plan lets a brand that sells on another platform list its products in Shopify Catalog and sell them through Shopify's agentic storefronts in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, without building a Shopify store or migrating. You import products into a Shopify admin, verify the business, and point product links back to your existing site. Shopify's plan page says there's no monthly fee. What you give up is most of what makes Shopify a store platform: you can build a Shopify storefront on this plan, but you can't publish it or take orders through it.

This guide is for merchants on WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud or a custom build who keep hearing that Shopify can put them in AI chats, and for the agencies advising them. Every fact comes from shopify.com/agentic-plan, Shopify's Help Center and shopify.dev, listed under Sources. Shopify's pages don't give a launch date for the plan, so we don't either.

Shopify Agentic plan
A Shopify plan for merchants who don't use Shopify as their ecommerce platform. It adds their products to Shopify Catalog and lets them sell through agentic storefronts in AI channels, and on other Shopify channels such as the Shop channel, without a published Shopify online store. It has no monthly subscription fee; payment and app fees can apply.

What is Shopify's Agentic plan?

It's the same AI-channel plumbing standard Shopify stores get, offered on its own. Shopify's Help Center describes it as a plan that lets you add products to Shopify Catalog and sell them with agentic storefronts without a Shopify online store. Customers discover and buy your products in AI channels, and you can also sell on other Shopify channels such as the Shop channel.

Shopify Catalog
Shopify's product index that shares eligible merchants' product data (titles, descriptions, variants, images, prices, stock) with AI channels. Stores and products enter automatically when they meet Shopify's Catalog requirements. Eligibility doesn't guarantee placement: each AI channel decides what to show.
Agentic storefronts
Shopify's feature for discovery and purchase inside AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. It's managed under Sales channels → Agentic in the Shopify admin and is active by default for eligible stores on standard plans.

Shopify's marketing page pitches it as "connect once, sync everywhere": real-time product data to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and the Shop app, with more coming. The Help Center's channel pages currently cover ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Where the two differ, plan on the Help Center list, because that's where the setup steps are.

Shopify also says the plan fits into an existing stack. It plugs into PIMs and tax systems, and you can route orders to your own order management system. Its Knowledge Base app comes pre-installed, so you can give AI agents store facts and FAQs about returns, shipping and the like.

Who is the Agentic plan for, and who should skip it?

Shopify names three kinds of business it can work for:

  • Businesses on legacy or custom platforms that want agentic commerce without extensive development work.
  • Businesses of any size that want to sell through AI channels without connecting to each one separately.
  • Businesses that want to build a Shopify online store before moving to a paid Shopify plan.

Read the first two together and the real customer is clear: a brand whose store lives elsewhere and doesn't want to build separate integrations for each AI channel. Shopify becomes a syndication and checkout layer, while your existing site stays the storefront.

Who should skip it:

  • Merchants already on a paid Shopify plan. Shopify's plan page says AI selling is built in for existing stores. Agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible stores, so there's nothing to add.
  • B2B-only sellers. Shopify says B2B-only products aren't supported for agentic storefronts.
  • Sellers in excluded categories. Shopify Catalog doesn't include alcohol, tobacco and vaping, CBD supplements, weapons, services and add-ons, event tickets and several other categories, whatever plan you're on.
  • Brands that want a Shopify storefront live now. The Agentic plan lets you build one but not publish it. If that's the goal, a paid plan is the direct route.

What does the Agentic plan cost?

Shopify's plan page says: "No monthly fee. Card rates from 2.9% + 30¢ USD online." The Help Center fills in where fees do apply:

  • Payment fees on direct checkout. When a customer completes a purchase in an AI channel's Shopify-powered direct checkout, you pay Shopify Payments fees or third-party transaction fees, depending on your provider. A third-party provider also requires a payment method on file for those fees.
  • Paid apps and services. Anything paid you add is billed as usual.
  • A paid plan, if you move to one. That plan's subscription fee then applies.

ChatGPT is the exception. On ChatGPT the purchase happens on your existing online store's checkout, not Shopify's, and Shopify's ChatGPT page says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond standard payment processing. In practice that processing runs through whatever your current platform and gateway charge. The Help Center's fee list covers only the Shopify-powered direct checkout.

What does the Agentic plan leave out?

Shopify's Help Center lists five features that aren't available on the Agentic plan. Two more limits sit in the setup guide and shopify.dev:

  • Publishing an online store or selling through its checkout. You can build a Shopify store in Sales channels → Online Store, but it stays password-protected and customers can't buy through it.
  • Shopify Messaging.
  • Selling gift cards.
  • Creating orders manually.
  • Shop post-purchase offers.
  • Oxygen hosting. Shopify's Hydrogen and Oxygen docs list Oxygen on paid plans from Starter to Plus and state it isn't available on Agentic plans. A headless Hydrogen storefront would need a paid plan or self-hosting.
  • ChatGPT order history in Shopify. The setup guide says you can't review ChatGPT orders in Shopify on this plan. Use your existing store's analytics, which is where those sales happen.

There's also a default you need to know about. On standard plans, direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini and in Copilot is active by default for eligible stores. On the Agentic plan, direct selling is deactivated by default, and you opt in per channel after setup. That's sensible for a brand whose orders, tax and fulfillment run elsewhere, but it means nothing sells in-chat until you switch it on.

If you're weighing a headless build later, who needs Hydrogen covers that decision separately.

How does checkout work on the Agentic plan?

Shopify says AI channels support two selling paths. Some do discovery only and send the shopper to your existing checkout. Others support a Shopify-powered direct checkout, where the shopper pays without leaving the AI channel. Your admin shows which options your store has.

Direct checkout
A Shopify-powered checkout that runs inside an AI channel, so the shopper completes the purchase without leaving the chat. On the Agentic plan it requires a payment provider, shipping and tax settings in Shopify, and it's off by default until you opt in per channel.
ChannelWhere products come fromWhere the shopper paysOn the Agentic plan

How each AI channel sells for an Agentic plan store (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Direct checkout has limits worth knowing before you switch it on. Shopify's Google and Copilot pages list the same gaps:

  • Unsupported products: subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products (line-item properties) and B2B-only products.
  • Tracking: Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire. Only server-to-server checkout started and completed events do.
  • Delivery: local delivery, pickup in store and pickup points aren't supported.
  • Checkout blocks: only blocks essential to completing checkout load, so custom fields, upsells and some validations may not appear.
  • Accounts: you can't require customers to sign in before checkout.

Two more rules apply whichever channel the order came from. All refunds for AI-channel orders must go through your Shopify admin, even with a third-party payment provider. And if you fulfill outside Shopify, you have to update order status in Shopify so AI channels can give customers accurate updates. Shopify suggests webhooks such as orders/create and the GraphQL Admin API for syncing orders to your own system.

How does the Agentic plan compare with a standard Shopify plan?

The cleanest way to decide is side by side. "Standard" here means a paid Shopify plan from Starter up, which is the minimum Shopify Catalog accepts for a regular store. We don't list standard plan prices; check Shopify's pricing page.

Agentic plan vs. a standard paid Shopify plan, for AI channel selling (Shopify Help Center and shopify.dev, October 2026).

The trade is plain. The Agentic plan buys AI-channel reach without replatforming, at the cost of running two systems: your store, and a Shopify admin that must mirror its products, prices, stock, policies and order status. If keeping that mirror accurate is hard for your team, the low fee won't help.

How do you set up the Agentic plan?

Shopify's setup guide runs in four stages. For ChatGPT alone, you only need the first. For channels with direct checkout, you need all four.

  1. 01

    Verify the business

After sign-up, go to Sales channels → Agentic and complete Get ready for Agentic Storefronts: business details, identity verification, and an official business registration document. The store owner, or staff with the Manage and install apps and channels permission, can complete it. Shopify may ask you to reverify later.

  2. 02

    Set up product discovery

Import products by CSV (no real-time sync), the GraphQL Admin API productSet mutation, or a PIM connector app. Add each product's external product URL to the external URL standard metafield. Publish terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy. Add and verify your existing domain with a TXT record. Optionally fill in the Knowledge Base app and group variants with catalog mapping.

  3. 03

    Configure checkout (direct-checkout channels only)

Set up Shopify Payments or a third-party provider, shipping zones and rates (with product weights if rates are weight-based), and taxes through Shopify Tax, manual rates or an app. Optionally add a custom checkout domain, since the default is a .myshopify.com address, and set discounts.

  4. 04

Set up orders and activate channels

Decide whether to fulfill in Shopify or export orders to your own system, and keep order status updated either way. Then install the Google & YouTube channel for Google AI Mode and Gemini, or the Facebook and Instagram channel for Meta, and opt in to direct checkout on each channel you want.

Pick the import method for your rate of change

Shopify's guidance is direct: if your catalog has frequent price or stock changes, sync in real time with the Admin API or webhooks, because CSV imports don't sync. A Shopify mirror that lags your real store will show AI shoppers stale prices and sold-out products. That's the core failure mode of this plan, and you can prevent it.

Products appear only after they pass Shopify Catalog's requirements: a title, an image, a price above 0, an allowed category, and on this plan the external product URL. Shopify's troubleshooting list for missing products starts with those, then policies and domain verification. Then the usual caveat: eligibility doesn't guarantee placement, because each channel decides what to show.

What happens if you later move to a paid Shopify plan?

Shopify designed the plan as an on-ramp. When you move to a paid plan, your products, store settings and agentic storefronts setup carry over. You can remove the password and publish the online store you built. Until you publish, AI-channel product links keep pointing to your existing site. After you publish, they point to your Shopify store.

That makes a staged migration possible: sell through AI channels first, build the Shopify store in the background, then switch product links and checkout over in one move. A platform migration is still a migration, though, and redirects, URL structure and SEO need the usual care. Our guide to migrating to Shopify without losing rankings covers that part.

Is the Agentic plan worth it?

Shopify publishes no conversion data for the plan, and we won't invent any. Here's how we'd make the call instead.

Our rule of thumb

The Agentic plan makes sense when three things are true: you sell to U.S. shoppers (the direct checkouts in Google and Copilot show only to U.S. customers), your products fall outside Shopify's excluded categories, and you can sync price and stock to Shopify automatically. If you can only manage CSV uploads, start with ChatGPT discovery alone, where the sale stays on your own checkout, and add direct checkout once the sync is reliable. This is a decision rule, not a forecast.

Whatever you decide, the bottleneck in AI channels is rarely the plan. It's product data that an agent can match to a shopper's question. The AI shopping channels guide compares where each channel gets its data, and should you turn off agentic storefronts covers the opt-out side for brands already on Shopify.

FAQ

Is Shopify's Agentic plan free?

There's no monthly subscription fee, according to Shopify's plan page, which lists card rates from 2.9% + 30¢ USD online. You pay Shopify Payments or third-party transaction fees when a shopper buys through a Shopify-powered direct checkout in an AI channel, plus any paid apps. ChatGPT purchases happen on your existing store's checkout instead.

Do I need a Shopify store to use the Agentic plan?

No. That's the point of the plan. You import products into a Shopify admin, verify your business and domain, and add an external product URL for each product so AI channels link back to your existing site. You can build a Shopify online store on the plan, but it stays password-protected until you move to a paid plan.

Can customers buy inside ChatGPT on the Agentic plan?

Not inside the chat. Shopify's setup guide says ChatGPT sends customers to your existing online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab, and Shopify's direct checkout isn't used for ChatGPT. In-chat purchase through Shopify's direct checkout applies to Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, once you opt in.

I'm already on Shopify. Should I switch to the Agentic plan?

No. Shopify's plan page says AI selling is built in for existing Shopify stores. Eligible stores on standard plans already have agentic storefronts on by default, with direct checkout active where the channel supports it. Switching would cost you a published online store and features such as gift cards and manual orders.

What features are missing from the Agentic plan?

Shopify's Help Center lists publishing an online store and selling through its checkout, Shopify Messaging, gift card sales, manual order creation and Shop post-purchase offers. Shopify's developer docs add that Oxygen hosting isn't available. The setup guide says ChatGPT order history isn't viewable in Shopify, and direct checkout is off by default.

Which AI channels does the Agentic plan cover?

Shopify's plan page names ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and the Shop app, with more coming. The Help Center's setup pages cover ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Google needs the Google & YouTube channel and Meta needs the Facebook and Instagram channel installed and syncing.

What happens to my setup if I upgrade to a paid Shopify plan?

Shopify says your products, store settings and agentic storefronts setup carry over to the new plan. You can then publish your Shopify online store. AI-channel product links keep pointing to your existing site until you publish, and switch to your Shopify store afterwards, which makes a staged migration possible.
