Agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible Shopify stores. To change anything, go to Sales channels → Agentic and turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me". Then you can switch Shopify Catalog access, direct checkout and auto-enrollment per channel.
- Turning off Catalog access stops ChatGPT, Copilot and other agents receiving your product feed from Shopify, but Shopify says it can take up to 7 days, and those channels can still find your products by crawling the web, with less accurate data.
- Google AI Mode and Gemini get products from Merchant Center, and Meta from the Facebook and Instagram channel, so the Agentic page only switches off their direct checkout. Shop isn't controlled there at all.
- You keep your online store, your SEO, your Google listings and your products in Shopify Catalog. Opting out is reasonable for compliance-sensitive categories, wholesale leakage or checkout features direct checkout can't run. For most stores the better move is to turn off direct checkout, not discovery.
Short answer: most Shopify stores shouldn't turn agentic storefronts off entirely, but many should turn off something. The setting isn't one switch. It's a set of per-channel controls for product discovery and for checkout, and the right answer is often to keep discovery and send buyers to your own checkout. Turn discovery off only when you have a reason a setting can't fix: a regulated product line, wholesale products leaking to consumers, or a contract that limits where you sell.
This guide is for Shopify merchants who found agentic storefronts switched on after Shopify's Spring '26 Edition (June 17, 2026) and want to know what turning them off does. Every setting and timing below comes from Shopify's help center and Supplemental Terms, listed under Sources. Where Shopify doesn't document something, such as whether a channel deletes data it already received, we say so. For the wider map of AI channels, start with the AI shopping channels guide.
- Agentic storefronts
- Shopify's feature that lets customers discover and buy your products inside AI channels: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. It's active by default for eligible stores and managed under Sales channels → Agentic. Product data reaches most channels through Shopify Catalog. Google and Meta discovery comes from their own sales channels.
What does turning off agentic storefronts actually control?
Four separate things, and they live in different places. Shopify's Agentic page documentation says Allow Shopify to manage for me is the default. With it on, agentic storefronts can access your products through Shopify Catalog, direct checkout is active on the channels that offer it, and you're auto-enrolled in new storefronts. Turn it off and three controls appear:
- Shopify Catalog access, globally or per channel. Off means third-party storefronts can no longer pull your products through Catalog from that point on, and direct checkout on those channels goes off with it.
- Direct checkout, per channel where it exists (Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta). Off means shoppers can still find your products but are sent to your online store to buy.
- Auto enroll new storefronts. Off stops Shopify enrolling you in channels it adds later, while keeping current access. You can still enroll manually.
Smaller agents are grouped under Other channels, with a single Catalog access switch for the group. Outside the Agentic page there are two more levers: product status (Unlisted) and the seo.hidden metafield, which hide individual products. Separately, a store can be "opted out of sharing products with AI channels" at account level. Shopify says that state is distinct from the Catalog access setting, and only Shopify Support can resolve it.
- Shopify Catalog access
- The per-channel permission that lets an AI channel receive your product data (titles, descriptions, images, prices, availability) from Shopify Catalog. Turning it off filters your products out of what Catalog sends that channel. It doesn't remove your products from Shopify Catalog itself.
- Direct checkout
- A Shopify-powered checkout that runs inside an AI channel, so the shopper pays without leaving the conversation. It's on by default for eligible stores on Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. ChatGPT has none: Shopify sends ChatGPT buyers to your online store checkout.
What do you lose on each channel?
It depends on the channel, because the channels don't all get your data the same way. Shopify's data and privacy page says ChatGPT only offers the Catalog access setting, while Google and Meta discovery is powered by their own sales channels rather than the Agentic setting.
| Channel | Where it gets your products | Switches on the Agentic page | If you switch it off | What stays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog | Catalog access only | Your data is filtered out of what Catalog sends ChatGPT, within up to 7 days | Discovery through web crawling; Catalog sharing with other channels and Shop |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify Catalog | Catalog access and direct checkout | Catalog off: no Catalog feed, up to 7 days. Checkout off: buyers sent to your store | Crawled discovery; with checkout off, Catalog discovery |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Google Merchant Center | Direct checkout only | Buyers sent to your online store to pay | Discovery, for as long as your products are in Merchant Center |
| Meta (Meta AI and Muse) | Facebook and Instagram channel | Direct checkout only | Buyers sent to your online store to pay | Discovery and shoppable ads through the Meta channel |
| Other channels | Shopify Catalog | One Catalog access switch for the group | Smaller agents lose Catalog access | Whatever they can crawl |
| Shop | Shopify Catalog | None; can't be switched off here | Not applicable | Everything, unless you use Unlisted, seo.hidden or the Shop channel settings |
Two consequences surprise people. Turning off Catalog access for ChatGPT doesn't affect Shop or any other channel that uses Catalog. And turning off direct checkout for Google doesn't remove you from AI Mode: Shopify's Google page says products stay discoverable as long as they're in Merchant Center. Shopify doesn't document an AI Mode-only discovery switch, and Google's excluded_destination attribute has no AI Mode value. Its Free_listings value hides products from free listings on Google as a whole, which is a much bigger decision.
What do you keep when you opt out?
More than most merchants expect. Opting out of agentic storefronts leaves these untouched:
- Your online store and its checkout, sitemaps and on-site search. None of the Agentic settings touch them. (Unlisted does, which is why it's a blunt tool.)
- Your SEO and Google listings. Merchant Center, free listings and Shopping ads run through the Google & YouTube channel, not the Agentic page.
- Your products in Shopify Catalog. Shopify says removing agentic storefronts' access doesn't remove products from Catalog. They stay available for storefront search and Shop.
- Orders already placed. You stay the merchant of record for them, and the Supplemental Terms keep obligations for completed transactions after you stop.
- Open-web discoverability. ChatGPT and others can still find your pages by crawling, unless you also block their crawlers. The AI crawler guide covers which bots do what.
Shopify warns that with Catalog access off, AI channels can still reach your product information through crawling and indexing, but that data may be less complete, accurate or current. Opting out of the feed can trade an accurate listing for a stale one. If your goal is accuracy, opting out works against you.
Why would a merchant turn agentic storefronts off?
There are real reasons. Here are the ones that hold up, and the setting that fits each.
Category and compliance
Shopify already keeps excluded categories out of Catalog (alcohol, tobacco, weapons, prescription products and more). But plenty of legal products carry disclosure duties: supplements, cosmetics with claims, products with age or safety warnings. Shopify asks for required legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of each product description, and an agent may only quote part of that. If your counsel isn't comfortable with a third party summarizing regulated claims, turning off Catalog access for those channels, or setting the affected products to Unlisted, is defensible.
Brand control and checkout experience
The Supplemental Terms say participating channels "may customize your customer's experience" on their interfaces, including overriding Checkout Branding API customizations. Shopify's channel pages list what direct checkout can't do: no subscriptions, bundles, customizable products or B2B-only products; no local delivery or pickup; no required sign-in; and most checkout blocks (loyalty, upsells, custom fields) won't load. If your conversion relies on those, turn off direct checkout, not discovery. Buyers then land on your own checkout with everything intact.
Margin and measurement
Shopify's channel pages say there are no fees for ChatGPT and no fees beyond standard payment processing for direct checkout. The Supplemental Terms do reserve "Agentic Storefronts Fees" for transactions on certain channels, so that could change. The more immediate cost is measurement. Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire in direct checkout, only server-to-server started and completed events, so paid-media attribution gets thinner. Shopify's Agentic page reports sales, orders and conversion per AI channel, which covers part of the gap.
Pricing parity and channel conflicts
Agentic storefronts carry your direct-to-consumer price. Products sold to both businesses and consumers appear at the D2C price, and Shopify warns that wholesale setups built with third-party apps may not be detected, so wholesale-only products can leak into AI channels. If you have wholesale-only SKUs, distributor agreements, or advertised-price commitments that limit where you list, the clean fix is product-level: Shopify suggests using Shopify B2B, hiding the affected products from AI channels, or, on Shopify Plus, a separate expansion store for B2B. A store-wide opt-out is a heavy fix for a narrow problem.
Customer data
Shopify says channels with direct checkout receive the customer's name, email, phone number and physical address for the order, but not your order history, customers from other channels or your customer database. The Supplemental Terms also let Shopify collect and remit tax on these sales at its discretion. If your privacy notice or data agreements can't cover a third-party checkout, turning off direct checkout keeps that data on your own checkout.
What's the case against turning them off?
The main one: shoppers will ask AI assistants about your category whether you're in the feed or not. With Catalog access off, an agent either skips you or describes you from whatever it crawled, which may be last season's price. Your competitors' structured feeds stay in. Shopify reports that AI searches powered by Shopify Catalog convert at twice the rate of those using scraped data. That's Shopify's own figure, without a published method, but the direction matches the warning on its privacy page.
The second: the costs are mostly reversible without opting out. Checkout features you need? Turn off direct checkout. A few products that shouldn't be there? Hide those products. Wrong information in answers? That's a data problem, and opting out makes it worse. When AI shopping quotes the wrong price covers that fix.
Which setting fits your situation?
| Your situation | Recommended setting | Why |
|---|---|---|
| No specific concern; D2C store in allowed categories | Leave "Allow Shopify to manage for me" on | Maximum reach, accurate data, auto-enrollment in new channels |
| Checkout depends on subscriptions, bundles, loyalty blocks or pickup | Turn off direct checkout per channel; keep Catalog access | Keeps discovery, sends buyers to your full checkout |
| Attribution in GA4 or ad pixels matters more than conversion speed | Turn off direct checkout on the channels you can't measure | Pixels fire on your own checkout; Agentic reports cover the rest |
| A few wholesale-only, B2B or restricted SKUs | Unlisted, seo.hidden, or a B2B catalog on those products | Fixes the leak without losing the rest of the catalog (Unlisted also hides them from Google) |
| Regulated claims you can't let a third party summarize | Catalog access off for affected channels, or hide those products | Removes the feed; consider a robots.txt block too if counsel wants it gone |
| Contract limits on where you can list | Turn off auto-enrollment; pick channels deliberately | New channels don't switch on without a decision |
| Want out of every AI channel | Catalog access off globally, direct checkout off, Google and Meta handled in their own channels, Unlisted for anything that must vanish | Per Shopify's pages, no single switch covers Google, Meta, Shop and crawling |
How do you turn agentic storefronts off, step by step?
You need to be the store owner or have the Products → View and App and sales channel → Agentic staff permissions.
- 01
Open the Agentic page
In the Shopify admin, go to Sales channels → Agentic.
- 02
Take manual control
Deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me so the global and per-channel settings below become editable.
- 03
To leave every Catalog-fed channel
Deactivate Shopify Catalog access to remove existing and future third-party access through Catalog. Direct checkout goes off with it.
- 04
To leave one channel
Click ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot and deactivate Shopify Catalog access, or use the Other channels switch for smaller agents.
- 05
To keep discovery but use your own checkout
Click Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Meta AI and Muse and deactivate Direct checkout.
- 06
To stop future channels
Deactivate Auto enroll new storefronts. Existing access stays as you set it.
- 07
Save and wait
Click Save. Shopify says it can take up to 7 days before your product data stops being shared through Catalog.
For Google discovery, manage what reaches Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube channel. For Meta, use the Facebook and Instagram channel. For single products everywhere, including Shop, set Unlisted or the seo.hidden metafield, remembering Unlisted also drops the product from sitemaps, Google and your own store search. To undo everything, turn Allow Shopify to manage for me back on. That reactivates all agentic storefront settings, direct checkout included.
Shopify says sharing stops within up to 7 days, but it doesn't say whether a channel deletes product data it already received. The Supplemental Terms make disabling each channel your responsibility and let Shopify or a channel end the service at any time. If deletion matters to you, ask Shopify Support in writing.
How do you check the change worked?
Go back to Sales channels → Agentic after the 7-day window and confirm each channel shows the state you chose. Then test from the outside: ask ChatGPT or Copilot for your product the way a shopper would, in a fresh conversation, and note whether it appears, where it links and what price it quotes. A product that still appears with a stale price is coming from crawling, which a robots.txt rule governs, not the Agentic page. If you turned off direct checkout, buy-intent clicks should land on your own checkout.
If you're weighing the opposite problem (products you want in ChatGPT that aren't there), the troubleshooting guide runs every cause in order. For Google's checkout specifically, see Google UCP and Merchant Center. For how buying in ChatGPT works now, see how buying inside ChatGPT works now.
If you'd rather configure channels, checkout and catalog data with someone who's done it, Agentic Commerce Setup is where we take that on for Shopify stores.
FAQ
How do I turn off agentic storefronts on Shopify?
- Go to Sales channels → Agentic and deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me. Then deactivate Shopify Catalog access to remove all Catalog-fed channels, or open ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, or Meta AI and Muse to change one channel. Click Save. Google and Meta discovery are managed in their own sales channels.
How long does it take for my products to disappear from ChatGPT?
- Shopify says it can take up to 7 days before your product data stops being shared through Shopify Catalog. Even then, ChatGPT can still find your pages through web crawling and indexing, which robots.txt governs, not the Agentic page. Shopify doesn't document whether ChatGPT deletes data it already received.
Will turning off agentic storefronts hurt my SEO?
- No. The Agentic settings don't touch your online store, sitemaps, Google listings or Shopping ads. What does affect search is the Unlisted product status, which Shopify says also hides a product from sitemaps, search engines like Google and your own store search. Use it only for products you want hidden everywhere.
Can I stay in AI channels but use my own checkout?
- Yes, and for many stores it's the best middle ground. Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me, open Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Meta AI and Muse, and deactivate Direct checkout. Products stay discoverable, and shoppers are sent to your online store to pay, where your apps, pixels and checkout blocks all work.
Why are my products still in Google AI Mode after I opted out?
- Because Google AI Mode and Gemini discovery is powered by Google Merchant Center, not Shopify Catalog. The Agentic page only controls direct checkout for Google. Products stay discoverable as long as they're in Merchant Center. Shopify doesn't document an AI Mode-only discovery switch, so removing products from Merchant Center or free listings affects Google more broadly.
Does turning off Catalog access remove my products from the Shop app?
- No. Shopify says Shop's Catalog access can't be deactivated in the Agentic section, and removing agentic storefronts' access doesn't remove products from Shopify Catalog. To hide products from Shop as well, use the Unlisted status or the seo.hidden metafield, and the Shop sales channel settings.
Do agentic storefronts cost anything to keep on?
- Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT, and direct checkout on Google, Copilot and Meta costs nothing beyond standard payment processing. The Supplemental Terms, last updated October 6, 2026, reserve the right to charge Agentic Storefronts Fees on certain channels, so recheck before assuming that stays free.
Can I turn agentic storefronts back on later?
- Yes. Turn Allow Shopify to manage for me back on and Shopify reactivates all agentic storefront settings, including direct checkout. If your store shows that it's opted out of sharing products with AI channels, that's a separate account-level state, and Shopify says to contact Support to resolve it.
