ChatGPT Ads for Ecommerce: What Merchants Can Buy, and How It Works

What ChatGPT Ads let merchants buy: ad formats, product feed campaigns, CPM and CPC bidding, minimum budgets and markets. Then check your organic eligibility.

Short answer

ChatGPT Ads are paid placements shown below ChatGPT's answers to users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see none, and OpenAI says ads don't influence the answers.

  • Merchants buy them in OpenAI Ads Manager Beta (ads.openai.com), through agency and technology partners, or through OpenAI's sales team. Self-serve needs your billing legal entity in one of the 89 countries OpenAI lists.
  • You pay per 1,000 impressions (Views), per valid click (Clicks), or optimize toward a conversion while still paying per click or impression. You never pay per conversion. OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids at $3–$5 and sets a $25 minimum daily budget in USD.
  • Retailers can upload a product feed and run product-feed campaigns that show images, prices, sale prices and ratings. During the beta, products from an Ads Manager feed are ads-only: they don't enter organic ChatGPT results.
  • Shopify merchants already reach organic ChatGPT shopping through Shopify Catalog, with no channel fee. Ads are a separate paid layer. Fix organic eligibility and product data first, then test ads with a budget you can afford to learn on.

Short answer: ChatGPT Ads let a business pay to show a labelled ad below ChatGPT's answer when the conversation is relevant to what it sells. Ecommerce brands can run standard ads (headline, copy, image, landing page) or product-feed campaigns built from their catalog. You buy on a cost-per-impression or cost-per-click basis in OpenAI's Ads Manager Beta, which is self-serve in 89 countries. The ad sends the shopper to your site. It doesn't put your products into ChatGPT's own shopping answers, which run on a separate, unpaid path.

This guide is for merchants and their paid-media agencies sizing up a test budget. Everything here comes from OpenAI's help center, developer docs and announcements, listed under Sources. The platform is a beta that OpenAI says will keep changing. Where OpenAI publishes nothing, such as benchmarks, we say so.

ChatGPT Ads
OpenAI's advertising program for ChatGPT. Ads are paid placements, clearly labelled and shown separately from ChatGPT's response, to eligible users on the Free and Go plans. Advertisers buy them through OpenAI Ads Manager Beta, partners, or OpenAI's sales team, and pay per impression or per valid click.

What are ChatGPT ads, and where do they appear?

A ChatGPT ad is a sponsored unit placed below a ChatGPT response. OpenAI's user FAQ says a person sees one ad unit at a time, which may contain one or several images, and that OpenAI is also testing a multi-image visual format during image generation. Ads are labelled and separated from the answer, and seeing one doesn't mean OpenAI endorses the advertiser.

OpenAI's help center dates the first U.S. ad test to February 9, 2026, followed by a pilot through April and then self-serve onboarding. Self-serve reached 31 European markets on August 31, 2026, and a later OpenAI post put ChatGPT Ads in 89 countries with over 100,000 advertisers, OpenAI's own unverified count.

One rule shapes everything else: answer independence. OpenAI's FAQ says ads run on separate systems from the chat model and advertisers can't shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses. Buying ads won't make ChatGPT recommend your product in its own answer.

Who sees ChatGPT ads, and who can buy them?

The audience. Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI doesn't show ads on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts, in Temporary Chats, or to accounts it identifies as belonging to someone under 18. So the people who can see your ad are the free and low-cost tiers. Heavy paid users can't.

The buyers. OpenAI lists three ways in. You can sign up for Ads Manager Beta at ads.openai.com, buy through agency partners (OpenAI names Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP) or technology partners (Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt among them), or contact the OpenAI Ads team if you're a larger advertiser. OpenAI says its ads system makes every delivery decision, whichever route you use.

The markets. Self-serve depends on where your business is. OpenAI's availability page says the legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in a listed country. As of October 22, 2026, it lists 89 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, most of the EU, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Elsewhere, you can create an account and wait to be notified.

New accounts may start in their home country only

OpenAI says some new self-serve accounts can advertise only in the ad account's own country until identity verification is approved and they reach a required spend there, a level it doesn't publish. A Bangladesh-registered exporter selling to U.S. buyers shouldn't count on U.S. reach from day one.

What do ChatGPT ads look like for an online store?

  • Standard ads. Each ad carries the advertiser name, a favicon (your logo), a title, description copy, an image and a landing page. You write them, group them into ad groups by theme, and add context hints describing the conversations they fit.
  • Product-feed ads. You upload a product feed and Ads Manager builds ads from it. OpenAI says these use formats designed for catalog items, showing product images, titles, star ratings, prices, sale prices and your brand. OpenAI calls them among its strongest performers, without a number.

OpenAI's creative guidance asks for several title and copy variations per offering, each with a different angle, and landing pages that go to the most relevant product or collection rather than your homepage. Those pages must not block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot, so a CDN-level AI-crawler block can sink an ad on its own.

How does ChatGPT decide which ad to show?

OpenAI says its system picks ads on expected relevance and outcomes. The signals it names are the context and intent of the current conversation, your landing page, title and copy, your context hints and targeting, and, when the user has ads personalization on, select signals from their wider ChatGPT use, including past chats and memory. Among eligible ads it runs a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, so a higher bid helps but a weak, off-topic ad can still lose.

Context hints
Short descriptions an advertiser adds at the ad-group level to describe the conversations, topics or keywords where its products may be relevant. OpenAI says they guide matching but are not exact-match keywords and don't guarantee delivery in any specific conversation.

Users can switch personalization off, and then see ads based on the current chat only. It isn't initially available in the EEA or Switzerland, so OpenAI tells advertisers targeting those regions to avoid custom audiences. Some contexts never carry ads: the placement policy excludes personal health, mental health, politics and other sensitive or brand-unsafe topics, whoever is bidding.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

OpenAI publishes the pricing model, a suggested starting bid and minimum budgets. It publishes no average CPMs, CPCs or ROAS, and says it has no performance benchmarks yet. Treat any "average ChatGPT CPC" elsewhere as unsourced.

ObjectiveWhat you pay forWhat delivery optimizes towardBid you set
Views (CPM)Every 1,000 impressions servedVisibility and reachMaximum CPM bid per ad group
Clicks (CPC)Each valid clickTraffic to your siteMaximum CPC bid; OpenAI suggests starting at $3–$5
Conversions, click billing (oCPC)Each valid clickOne standard conversion event after a clickBid Cap; OpenAI gives no recommended amount
Conversions, impression billing (oCPM)Every 1,000 impressions servedConversions after views or clicksBid Cap; OpenAI gives no recommended amount
ChatGPT Ads campaign objectives and how each one bills (OpenAI help center, October 2026).

Three details matter. You never pay per conversion: the Conversions objective changes how delivery is optimized, not what you're billed for. The objective and billing option can't be changed after launch, so switching means cloning or rebuilding. And new eligible ad groups default to Maximize results, automatic bidding that OpenAI says guarantees no CPA, CPC or ROAS target, so use a manual max bid if you have a hard ceiling.

Budgets. Choose a campaign-total or a daily budget. A daily budget is an average over a Sunday-to-Saturday week: one day can reach twice the amount, the week no more than seven times it. The minimum daily budget is 25 USD (25 CAD, 25 AUD, 15 GBP, 15 EUR, 725 INR, among others). OpenAI suggests new advertisers start with a daily budget.

Spend shows up late

OpenAI says impressions, clicks and CTR refresh about every 15 minutes, but spend can lag 7–8 hours. A $0 spend line next to live clicks doesn't mean you haven't been charged. Don't raise budgets on a dashboard that hasn't caught up.

How do product feed campaigns work?

Product-feed campaigns are the format built for retailers with a large or fast-changing catalog. You give Ads Manager a feed, choose which products each ad group may use, and one ad template fills in each product's details when an ad is shown. The feed follows OpenAI's commerce product file spec, the same schema covered field by field in our OpenAI product feed spec guide.

  1. 01

    Create the feed

In Ads Manager, go to Tools → Feeds → Create Feed. Through the Advertiser API, you create a feed with a name and the countries your catalog covers.

  2. 02

    Import products

Pick an upload method: a CSV or TXT file, a hosted HTTPS URL, or SFTP. OpenAI says items expire after 2 weeks, so a one-off manual upload goes stale. Use a hosted URL or automated SFTP for anything you mean to keep running.

  3. 03

    Validate the upload

Processing takes minutes to hours. Check Upload History for errors. Not approved is an aggregate count with no per-item reasons.

  4. 04

    Create a Product feed campaign

Under Campaigns, choose Product feed as the campaign type. New product-feed campaigns can target and exclude by country only, not by state, city or postal code.

  5. 05

    Choose products per ad group

Select the feed and apply product filters (brand, category, price range and similar). For groupings the filters don't cover, add custom labels in each product's ads_metadata field, such as a bidding tier or product line, and filter on those.

  6. 06

Build the ad template and launch

One template per ad group. For now it only lets you choose the image field. Preview sample products, confirm the product count, set budget and bid strategy, and submit for review.

Required data. OpenAI's product file spec has nine required fields: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability and price. Product pages and images must be public HTTPS URLs. The spec's is_ads_eligible flag controls ads processing. Feeds created in Ads Manager make products ads-eligible by default unless an item is marked false.

Keeping it current. Price, title and availability changes on existing items go through the Delta API. New products, new images and full refreshes go through an SFTP re-upload of the whole catalog. An item marked out_of_stock stops qualifying for delivery once the change propagates. It's the same discipline that keeps prices right in organic answers (when AI shopping quotes the wrong price), except a stale price here costs a paid click.

The Products tab is not your feed

It lists only products that have already delivered, with up to a seven-hour lag. An empty tab before launch doesn't mean the upload failed; check the product count in ad-group setup instead.

Are ChatGPT ads the same as showing up in ChatGPT shopping?

No, and confusing the two is the most expensive mistake a merchant can make here. ChatGPT's organic shopping results come from product data merchants share for discovery. OpenAI's March 24, 2026 post on product discovery says Shopify merchants' product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog with no extra work, while other merchants share feeds through the Agentic Commerce Protocol. The ads feed is a different pipe: OpenAI's feed campaign guide says products from an Ads Manager feed are eligible only for ads during the beta and won't appear in organic conversations.

What can't you advertise on ChatGPT?

OpenAI's ad policies say the early program focuses on household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, and digital products and education. Most physical-product stores fall inside that. Several common ecommerce categories don't:

  • Disallowed: alcohol (over 0.5% ABV) and tobacco, vaping or nicotine; adult products, including sexual health products; gambling; cannabis, THC and psychedelics; counterfeits and replicas; diet pills, detox programs and supplements sold with unsupported health claims.
  • Allowed with conditions: lingerie, underwear and swimwear in a standard retail context; non-intoxicating hemp products such as THC-free CBD topicals; general wellness products and fitness equipment that make no medical claims.
  • Restricted, U.S. only, case by case: regulated health products such as consumer medical devices, dietary supplements and vision products, and some financial services. OpenAI may ask for proof of licensure.

Review covers title, copy, image and landing page together, so an approved creative linking to a page that features a disallowed product can still be rejected.

How do you measure ChatGPT ads?

Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC and CPM, and conversions. Conversions need OpenAI's JavaScript Measurement Pixel or server-side Conversions API, with standard events such as order_created. Sending a purchase from both? Reuse one event_id.

  • View-through. Where available, view-through conversions use a fixed one-day window. OpenAI's own pages disagree on whether they sit inside the Conversions total, so check the column definitions in your report. Bidding, billing and CPA stay click-based. Tracking setup on Shopify is covered in ChatGPT Ads conversion tracking on Shopify.
  • UTMs work. Static tracking parameters on landing-page URLs persist on ad clicks.
  • Some visits aren't clicks. OpenAI's ad-review crawlers visit landing pages with your parameters. Analytics may count them as paid traffic, but they aren't billed.
  • Aggregates only. Advertisers never receive users' chats, memories, names or emails.

Judge it on orders and revenue in your own store data, not just the platform's conversion column, and keep paid ChatGPT traffic in its own UTM segment so it doesn't blur your organic AI referrals. Measuring agentic commerce ROI sets out that framework.

Should an ecommerce brand test ChatGPT ads now?

Check three things first. This is a decision list, not a forecast; OpenAI hasn't published the benchmarks a forecast would need.

  1. 01Is your category allowed, and your business in a supported country? If not, revisit as OpenAI expands.
  2. 02Are you visible organically? If ChatGPT can't find your products for free, fix eligibility and product data before paying for clicks.
  3. 03Can you keep a feed honest? If you can't automate SFTP or Delta API updates, start with hand-built standard ads on a few hero products.
Our rule of thumb

Treat the first campaign as paid research. Pick one hero category, run Clicks with a manual max bid inside OpenAI's suggested range, cap it with a daily budget you'd accept losing, and tag every landing URL. The useful output isn't ROAS in week one. It's the set of conversations and products where ChatGPT shoppers actually click. This is a test design, not a benchmark.

Make sure the free channel works before you pay for the adThe AI Channel Eligibility Check reads your public signals (product rules, robots.txt, policy pages, structured data) and lists the admin checks that decide whether ChatGPT can show your products organically.Run the eligibility check

Once your products are eligible, the work is being the product an assistant picks, organic or paid: clean catalog data, accurate structured data, and facts agents can quote. Agentic Commerce Setup is where we take that on for Shopify stores.

FAQ

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

OpenAI doesn't publish average prices. You bid in an auction, paying per 1,000 impressions or per valid click, and OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids at $3–$5 USD. The minimum daily budget is $25 USD (15 EUR or 15 GBP in those currencies). OpenAI says it has no performance benchmarks yet, so your cost per sale comes from your own test.

Can I buy ChatGPT ads for my Shopify store?

Yes, if your business is based in a supported country and your products fall in an allowed category. You sign up at ads.openai.com, verify the account, add billing, and build standard ads or a product-feed campaign. OpenAI now publishes a ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify that syncs your catalog into an Ads Manager product feed and sends store events through the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify; it's live for US Shopify stores. Elsewhere, supply a feed in OpenAI's product file format.

Do ChatGPT ads make ChatGPT recommend my products?

No. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model and advertisers can't shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's answers. Your ad appears as a labelled unit below the response. Being recommended inside the answer depends on organic product data, such as Shopify Catalog for Shopify stores or a product feed shared through the Agentic Commerce Protocol.

Who will see my ChatGPT ads?

Users on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans in markets where ads run. OpenAI shows no ads on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts, none in Temporary Chats, and none to accounts it identifies as under 18. Ads also stay out of sensitive conversations such as personal health, mental health and politics.

Will products in my ChatGPT ads feed show up in organic ChatGPT shopping?

Not during the beta. OpenAI's help center says products uploaded through an Ads Manager feed are eligible only for ads and won't appear in organic ChatGPT conversations, though it may offer that later. Organic visibility comes through Shopify Catalog for Shopify merchants or through OpenAI's discovery feed under the Agentic Commerce Protocol.

Do I pay per conversion with ChatGPT conversion campaigns?

No. The Conversions objective changes what delivery optimizes for, not what you're billed for. You choose click billing (pay per valid click) or impression billing (pay per 1,000 impressions). You need the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API sending a standard event, such as a completed purchase, and each campaign optimizes toward one event that can't be changed later.

Which countries can advertise on ChatGPT?

As of October 22, 2026, OpenAI's availability page lists 89 countries for self-serve Ads Manager, including the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, most of the EU, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Your billed legal entity must be based in one of them. Some new accounts can advertise only in their home country until verification and a spend threshold are met.
