What Is Agentic Commerce? The Plain-English Definition and How It Works

What agentic commerce means, how an AI agent finds, compares and buys products, the protocols behind it and where it runs today. Then score your store for free.

Short answer

Agentic commerce is shopping in which an AI agent does some of the work a shopper used to do: it searches, compares products against the shopper's constraints, and in some places completes the purchase, with the shopper's approval.

  • It runs in four stages: discovery, comparison, checkout and post-purchase. The agent reads structured product data (Shopify Catalog, Google Merchant Center, direct feeds), not your homepage design.
  • Four open protocols carry most of it: OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), and the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Merchants on a platform rarely implement any of them directly.
  • In October 2026 it is live in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Perplexity and Amazon's Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus), with different rules on each about where the sale closes. The merchant stays merchant of record on every surface we checked.
  • For a merchant this quarter, the work is product data, honest policies and a checkout that survives being driven by software. Adobe measured AI referrals to US retail sites up 693.4% in the 2025 holidays, from what it calls a modest base.

Short answer: agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent acts on the shopper's behalf. Instead of a person typing keywords, opening ten tabs and filling in a checkout form, the person tells an assistant what they want ("waterproof trail shoes, wide fit, under $150, here by Friday"), and the agent finds candidates, compares them and either sends the shopper to buy or, on some surfaces, places the order after the shopper confirms. For a merchant, it means your products are increasingly chosen by software reading your data, and sometimes bought through a checkout that isn't on your website.

This is the plain-English explainer: what the term means, how it works end to end, the protocols in one table, where it runs today, and what it changes for a store this quarter. Every platform claim comes from the vendor's own announcement, help page or developer docs, listed under Sources. If you run a Shopify store and want the setup steps, the agentic commerce on Shopify guide is the how-to; this page stays one level up.

Agentic commerce
A way of buying and selling in which an AI agent performs part of the shopping journey for a person: discovering products, evaluating them against the person's stated constraints, and in some cases completing checkout and tracking the order, within limits the person approves. The merchant still sells the product, takes the payment through its own processor and handles fulfillment.

What does agentic commerce mean?

The useful word is agent. An agent is software that takes a goal and carries out steps toward it, rather than waiting for a person to click each one. A product-finder quiz isn't agentic: the shopper still does every step. A search engine isn't agentic either: it returns links and stops. An agent returns a decision, or something close to one, and can act on it.

In practice there's a spectrum, and most of what's live in 2026 sits in the middle of it. Every level still depends on the same thing from the merchant: product data an agent can read and trust.

LevelWhat the agent doesWho clicks BuyLive example

Two misreadings come up constantly. First, agentic commerce is not a chatbot on your site. A scripted bot follows a decision tree; an agent generates answers from your catalog and can fail with a confident wrong answer instead of a visible dead end. Second, it isn't only off-site. Microsoft's Brand Agents, announced January 8, 2026, put an agent on a merchant's own storefront. Microsoft Brand Agents on Shopify, explained covers that surface, and the agentic commerce glossary defines the surrounding terms in a sentence each.

How does agentic commerce work, step by step?

The four stages of an agentic purchase
01DiscoveryAgent searches catalogs andfeeds for the request02ComparisonRanks options on price, stock, reviews, fit03CheckoutIn the chat, on your site,or by the agent04Post-purchaseOrder status, delivery, returns
Each stage reads merchant data. The checkout stage varies most between surfaces.
  1. 01

Discovery: the agent looks for candidates

The shopper states a need in plain language. The agent searches product data it has access to: platform catalogs such as Shopify Catalog, channel feeds such as Google Merchant Center or OpenAI's product feed, and pages its crawlers have indexed. Google says AI Mode may use a "query fan-out", issuing several related searches across subtopics and sources. The practical point: a fact that exists only in a photo or a paragraph is harder for the agent to match than one in a structured field.

  2. 02

Comparison: the agent narrows the field

The agent checks candidates against the constraints (price, size, delivery date, material) and ranks them. OpenAI's help center lists the factors ChatGPT uses when several merchants sell the same item: availability, price, quality, and whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller. It also summarizes reviews from public websites, which OpenAI says it doesn't verify.

  3. 03

    Checkout: someone pays

This is where surfaces differ most. Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Perplexity can show a Buy button inside the conversation. ChatGPT sends Shopify shoppers to the store's own checkout in an in-app browser. Google's agentic checkout and Amazon's Buy for Me have the agent complete the purchase on the merchant's website. In every case we checked, the merchant's own payment processing settles the order.

  4. 04

    Post-purchase: the order lives on

Order confirmation, tracking, returns and support. UCP includes order management among its capabilities, and Shopify's agent docs describe an Order MCP tool that fetches fresh order state for questions like "where's my order?". Returns and service stay with the merchant: Perplexity, Amazon and Microsoft all say so in their own announcements.

Notice what the agent never needs: your homepage, your navigation or your hero banner. It needs the product record, the price and stock, the shipping and return terms, and a checkout that resolves cleanly. That's why the Shopify version of this story is mostly a data story, told in depth in the catalog enrichment playbook.

Which protocols power agentic commerce?

Four open standards come up in almost every conversation about agentic commerce. They solve different problems, and a merchant on Shopify, BigCommerce or a similar platform doesn't hand-code any of them. The agentic commerce protocols decoder has more on each; here they are at a glance.

ProtocolStarted byFirst publishedWhat it standardizesWhat a merchant does
Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)OpenAI and StripeSeptember 29, 2025, with ChatGPT's Instant CheckoutProduct feeds, checkout sessions and delegated payment between buyers, agents and businesses; Apache 2.0Off Shopify and Etsy, send an ACP product feed to ChatGPT once approved; Shopify merchants are covered through Shopify Catalog
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)Google, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and WalmartJanuary 11, 2026Discovery, checkout and order management; a business profile at /.well-known/ucp; runs over REST, MCP or A2AShopify merchants are UCP-enabled by default; others build an integration and apply to Google
Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)Google, with more than 60 organizationsSeptember 2025Signed "mandates" proving what a person authorized an agent to buyNothing directly; payment providers and platforms implement it
Model Context Protocol (MCP)Anthropic; donated to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation on December 9, 2025November 25, 2024A general way for AI apps to connect to tools and data; not commerce-specificNothing directly; Shopify's Catalog, Cart and Checkout tools are MCP servers
The four protocols at a glance, from each sponsor's own announcement or documentation.

Read the table as layers. MCP is the general plumbing that lets an agent call tools. ACP and UCP are the commerce languages: how an agent learns what a store sells and asks it to create a checkout. AP2 is about proving consent for the payment. Google's UCP announcement says UCP works over MCP and is compatible with AP2, so these aren't rival bets so much as pieces that fit together.

Underneath the protocols sit the card networks and processors. Visa announced Intelligent Commerce on April 30, 2025, with tokenized credentials and spending limits for agent purchases. Mastercard announced Agent Pay and its Agentic Tokens a day earlier, on April 29, 2025. Stripe's Shared Payment Tokens give a seller a scoped, expiring grant to charge a shopper's card. How those fit into a purchase is covered in what agentic checkout is.

Merchant of record
The business legally selling the product to the shopper: it takes the payment, owes the tax, issues refunds and handles chargebacks. In every agentic checkout we checked (ACP, UCP, Copilot Checkout, Perplexity's PayPal checkout), the AI company says the merchant keeps this role.

Where can shoppers use agentic commerce today?

Six surfaces matter to a Shopify or Amazon merchant in October 2026. Each reads product data differently and closes the sale differently, which is why "we're live in AI" means little until you say where.

SurfaceWhat the agent doesWhere the sale closesHow products get in
ChatGPT (OpenAI)Recommends and compares productsOn the merchant's own checkout; for Shopify, in ChatGPT's in-app browserShopify Catalog; ACP product feed for approved merchants; crawled pages

Two of these need a caveat. ChatGPT launched in-chat Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025, and on March 24, 2026 OpenAI said that version "did not offer the level of flexibility" it wanted and let merchants use their own checkout. OpenAI's help center still says some eligible products may show an in-chat option, so it isn't gone everywhere, but it isn't how Shopify stores sell in ChatGPT; how buying inside ChatGPT works now has the timeline. And Google calls its UCP checkout available to select merchants through early access, rolling out in phases.

Amazon renamed Rufus to Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. Amazon's own page says the assistant can auto-buy an item at a price the shopper sets, and that its Buy for Me feature completes purchases on other brands' websites for eligible products, with the brand handling delivery, returns and service. The AI shopping channels guide goes channel by channel for Shopify stores, including fees.

What are the benefits of agentic commerce for businesses?

Year-on-year rise in visits to US retail sites from generative AI tools, Nov 1 to Dec 31, 2025, across over 1 trillion visits Adobe Analytics measured. Adobe adds that the base of users remains modest.

Adobe, January 2026

That figure is about referral clicks, not purchases, and it grows from a small starting point. No vendor publishes what share of total ecommerce orders now flows through agents, so we don't know, and neither does anyone quoting a precise market size. What we can say is that the merchants who get recommended are the ones whose data answers the shopper's question. Whether that traffic converts for your store is a measurement question, covered in does AI traffic convert.

Is agentic commerce the same as AI shopping or agentic AI?

Close, but not identical. "Agentic AI" is the broad category: AI systems that take actions toward a goal instead of only generating text. Agentic commerce is that idea applied to buying and selling. "AI shopping" is looser still and often includes plain recommendations, which sit at the bottom of the spectrum above.

Agentic commerce is also separate from AI-powered features merchants already use, such as AI-written product descriptions or on-site search. Those help a human shopper. Agentic commerce is about a shopper delegating the task to software, and about your store being legible and trustworthy to that software. If your products are eligible but invisible, why Shopify products don't show in ChatGPT walks through the causes in order.

What does agentic commerce mean for a merchant this quarter?

Less than the headlines suggest, and more than doing nothing. For most stores between $100K and $10M a year, the quarter's work fits on one list:

  1. 01Find out where you already are. On Shopify, open Sales channels → Agentic and note which channels are active and whether direct checkout is on. Agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible stores, so many merchants are live without knowing it.
  2. 02Fix the product record for your best sellers. Complete attributes, a price above zero, real images, variant data and any legal disclosure within the first 6,000 characters of the description, which Shopify asks for on its ChatGPT page.
  3. 03Make one price and one promise. Price, stock, delivery windows and return terms should match across your product pages, feeds and policies. An agent quotes whichever source it read.
  4. 04Complete the three policies. Terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy are required for Shopify's AI channels, and agents may quote them word for word.
  5. 05Place a test order on each in-chat checkout. Include a discount code and a product type the channel doesn't support, so you see the failure before a shopper does.
  6. 06Set a baseline. Record AI-channel sales and orders now so you can judge changes later. Measuring agentic commerce ROI sets out the metrics.

Amazon sellers have a parallel list: listings that answer the questions shoppers ask Alexa for Shopping, covered in Amazon listing optimization for Rufus. Merchants on other platforms should ask their platform about UCP and ACP support before building anything, because most of the integration work is platform work. The step-by-step version for Shopify, with every setting named, is the 2026 Shopify agentic commerce guide, and the agentic commerce readiness checklist turns it into tick-boxes.

Our rule of thumb

Before spending on anything agentic, take your top 20 products by revenue, write down the ten questions shoppers in your category ask most, and count how many each product page answers from structured fields alone. Products that answer fewer than half are where the work starts. This is a triage method, not a benchmark.

FAQ

What is agentic commerce in simple terms?

It's shopping where an AI assistant does part of the work for you. You describe what you want, the assistant searches and compares products, and depending on the platform it either sends you to the store to buy or completes the checkout after you confirm. The store still sells the product, takes the payment and ships the order.

What is an example of agentic commerce?

A shopper asks Microsoft Copilot for a gift under $50, picks one of the suggestions and pays inside the chat through Copilot Checkout, which Microsoft announced on January 8, 2026. Another: Google's agentic checkout tracks the price of an item and, once it fits the shopper's budget and they confirm, buys it on the merchant's site with Google Pay.

How is agentic commerce different from traditional ecommerce?

In traditional ecommerce a person browses your site, filters, compares and checks out. In agentic commerce software does the browsing and comparing from your product data, and the checkout may happen inside the AI surface instead of on your site. Payments, fulfillment, returns and the merchant-of-record role stay with you in both models.

Do merchants need to implement ACP or UCP?

Usually not. Shopify merchants are UCP-enabled by default and reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, which OpenAI says needs no extra work. Merchants on other platforms should ask their platform first. Building a direct integration makes sense mainly for large retailers with engineering teams, and Google still approves UCP checkout merchant by merchant.

Who is the merchant of record in agentic commerce?

The merchant. OpenAI says it isn't the merchant of record under ACP, Google says merchants stay merchant of record with UCP checkout, Microsoft says Copilot never becomes merchant of record, and Perplexity says the same for its PayPal checkout. That means the refunds, chargebacks, taxes and customer service stay with you.

Is agentic commerce safe for shoppers?

The vendors build in confirmation steps and limits. Google says it asks permission and buys only after the shopper confirms; Visa and Mastercard use tokenized credentials, with limits and controls the cardholder sets; Stripe's Shared Payment Tokens are capped by amount and expiry. Reviews in ChatGPT are summarized from public websites, and OpenAI says it doesn't verify them.

Does agentic commerce need Shopify Plus?

No. Shopify Catalog requires the Starter plan or higher, and Shopify's ChatGPT, Copilot and Google channel pages list requirements about where you sell, product eligibility and completed policies, not a plan tier. Microsoft names no Shopify plan for Brand Agents. Brands not using Shopify for their store can use Shopify's Agentic plan.
