Shopify reports ChatGPT performance in three places: the **Agentic** page (Sales channels → Agentic, per AI channel), **Shopify Analytics** referrer data (the Sessions by referrer report and each order's conversion summary), and **GA4** if you've connected it.
- For Shopify stores, ChatGPT doesn't close the sale in the chat. Agentic storefronts send the shopper to your own online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab, so the visit reaches your store and shows up as a referral.
- The three numbers won't match. The Agentic page includes Shop app activity and direct-checkout sales from other channels, GA4 depends on consent and on the referrer arriving, and visits with no referrer land in Direct everywhere.
- Use Shopify orders as the revenue of record and GA4 for share of traffic and behaviour. Don't assume ChatGPT adds utm tags: check your own landing-page URLs first. Then reconcile the two once a month and write down the gap.
To track ChatGPT traffic and revenue on Shopify, look in three places. Sales channels → Agentic shows sales, orders, sessions and conversion for each AI channel, ChatGPT included. Shopify Analytics shows ChatGPT as a referrer, in the Sessions by referrer report and in each order's conversion summary. GA4, connected through the Google & YouTube app, shows ChatGPT visits in its AI Assistant channel or in a custom channel you build. Each counts a slightly different thing. Pick one as the number of record, and reconcile the others to it once a month.
This guide is for Shopify merchants who can see ChatGPT in their referrers and want a number they can defend, and for the agencies who report it to them. Admin paths and report names come from Shopify's help center and Google's Analytics Help as of October 2026, listed under Sources. Where neither vendor documents something (how ChatGPT orders are labelled on the order record, for example) we say so and tell you what to check instead. The wider picture, across every AI channel and tool, is in our guide to AI traffic attribution.
- ChatGPT referral traffic
- Visits to your online store that arrive from a link in ChatGPT, whether the link came from Shopify's agentic storefronts (product listings fed by Shopify Catalog) or from ChatGPT's search answers. Both reach your store as ordinary online store sessions, identified by their referrer when the browser passes one.
How does a ChatGPT shopper end up on a Shopify store?
There are two routes, and both end on your site. The first is agentic storefronts: Shopify sends eligible products to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. Shopify's ChatGPT page describes the channel as a discovery-focused referrer, and says ChatGPT shoppers complete the purchase on your online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or in a new tab on ChatGPT web. The second is the open web: ChatGPT's search features can link to product pages OpenAI's crawler has indexed.
That matters for measurement. On ChatGPT, a Shopify merchant's sale doesn't close inside the chat. ChatGPT Instant Checkout, which launched on September 29, 2025, isn't how Shopify stores sell there: OpenAI moved merchants to their own checkouts on March 24, 2026. So a ChatGPT order is an online store order, preceded by an online store session, and your existing tools can see it. Other AI channels behave differently, which the comparison below covers.
- Agentic storefronts
- Shopify's feature that lets customers discover and buy your products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini. It is managed under Sales channels → Agentic in the Shopify admin. Shopify says orders from AI channels display in your admin with channel or referrer attribution.
Where does Shopify report ChatGPT sales?
The fastest view is the Agentic page. Shopify's agentic storefronts management page documents a performance report per AI channel.
- 01
Open the Agentic page
In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic.
- 02
Pick a metric
In the main analytics section, the metric drop-down defaults to Sales. The other options are Orders, Online store sessions and Online store conversions.
- 03
Set the dates
Click the Last 30 days drop-down, set a custom date range, and click Apply.
- 04
Open ChatGPT's report
Click the name of the AI channel, in this case ChatGPT, to see that channel's report.
- 05
See the total across channels
For all AI channels together, go to the Explore section and click Review in the Understand your performance on agentic channels panel.
Shopify defines online store sessions as visits to your online store from an AI channel, and online store conversion as sessions that completed checkout divided by sessions. Three caveats from the same page change how you read it:
- Sales mix two kinds of sale. Shopify says sales data aggregates referral-based sales and sales that happen through direct checkout. ChatGPT is referral-based for Shopify stores, but the cross-channel total also includes in-chat checkouts on other channels.
- The Shop app is included. Shopify says sessions, referrals and sales from the Shop app are all included in agentic storefronts performance reporting. Separate it before you compare the cross-channel total with GA4, which has no idea what the Shop app is.
- Headless stores get nothing here yet. Shopify says agentic storefronts performance analytics aren't available for headless stores. Use the referrer reports and GA4 below instead.
How do I see ChatGPT sessions and orders in Shopify Analytics?
Outside the Agentic page, ChatGPT is a referrer like any other, and Shopify Analytics gives you two views of it: one across all sessions, and one order by order.
Sessions by referrer
Go to Analytics > Reports, open the Category filter, select Acquisition, and open Sessions by referrer. Shopify's acquisition reports page describes the referrer fields: referring channel (the specific source, such as Instagram or Google), referring platform (the company behind it), referring medium (such as social, search or email) and traffic type (such as direct, organic or paid). Shopify says these values are processed and standardized, but doesn't say how it classifies AI assistants, so look for ChatGPT in the referring channel values rather than assuming a category.
The order's conversion summary
To check a single order, go to Orders, click the order number, and find the Conversion summary section. Click View conversion details, then View full sessions to see each visit. Shopify's conversion summary page says a session can show its referral, the landing page, any UTM parameters, and app details. It uses chatgpt.com as its example referrer.
Some orders only get a limited summary, with the referrer and landing page if known but no visit timeline. Shopify gives headless storefronts and blocked cookies as examples. Expect more limited summaries from in-app browsers and privacy-conscious shoppers, and don't read a missing referrer as "not from ChatGPT".
Order fields for custom reports
Shopify's analytics fields reference lists Order referrer name (the site that led to the order), Order sales channel (the sales channel the order came from) and Order UTM medium, among others. Shopify doesn't document which sales channel a ChatGPT agentic-storefront order is recorded under, only that AI channel orders carry "channel or referrer attribution". So open one order you know came from ChatGPT, note its sales channel and referrer, and build your report on what you see.
Shopify's analytics updates page says a session measurement update rolled out from September 21 to 23, 2026. Sessions now follow continued activity instead of ending at midnight UTC, and identified bot sessions are filtered out of session reports by default. Session counts and conversion rates may shift across that date. Orders and sales are unaffected. Note it beside any month-over-month comparison that spans late September.
How do I track ChatGPT traffic in GA4 on a Shopify store?
First, connect GA4 the way Google recommends. Google's Shopify Google tag guide has you install the Google & YouTube app from the Shopify App Store, then, on the app's Overview page, find Just want to set up Google Analytics 4 and click Get started to connect your property. Google calls that option strongly preferred over adding the tag by hand. Disconnecting the integration later stops all GA data from the app, purchase events included.
Then look in two places. GA4's default channel group has an AI Assistant channel, added in 2026, which catches visits whose referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants. ChatGPT is one of the assistants Google names. Go to Reports, then Acquisition > Traffic acquisition, and add Session source as a secondary dimension to see ChatGPT on its own row.
Because Google doesn't publish its full list, build a custom channel group too, with one regex on source placed above Referral, so assistants Google doesn't recognize are counted as well. GA4's AI Assistant channel: what it counts and what it misses has the regex, the click path and the ordering decision.
For ChatGPT, the shopper checks out on your online store checkout, so your normal tracking setup applies there. Shopify only documents that Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire for the direct checkout inside Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini. It doesn't document how ChatGPT's in-app browser handles referrers or consent. Test it yourself, as described below.
Does ChatGPT add UTM parameters to links?
We couldn't confirm it from OpenAI's own documentation. OpenAI's help center blocked automated access when we checked in October 2026, and the OpenAI developer pages we could open (the crawler documentation and the product feed specification) don't mention UTM parameters. The feed spec only asks that the product URL stays stable.
So don't build your tracking on an assumption. Check your own data, which is quicker anyway:
- 01In a few ChatGPT orders' conversion summaries, open the sessions and see whether the UTM parameters section shows a source naming ChatGPT.
- 02In Shopify Analytics, look at the UTM source values for the month. Shopify notes that field requires UTM tagging, so anything there came from a tagged link.
- 03In GA4's Traffic acquisition report, compare the source and medium pairs for ChatGPT visits. A visit with a utm_source tag and one without it may be labelled differently.
Whatever you find, the regex approach copes with both cases, because it matches on source, and a ChatGPT source contains "chatgpt" whether it came from a referrer or a tag. What it can't do is recover a visit that arrived with neither, which lands in Direct in GA4 and as a direct visit in Shopify.
Why do Shopify and GA4 show different ChatGPT numbers?
They count different things, by design. Expect a gap, explain it once, and track whether it is stable.
| Question | Shopify Agentic page | Shopify Analytics referrers | GA4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| What identifies a ChatGPT visit? | Shopify's own AI channel attribution; Shopify doesn't publish the method | The referrer, processed and standardized by Shopify | The referrer (AI Assistant channel) or your regex on source |
| Shop app activity included? | Yes, Shopify says it's included in agentic reporting | Not documented | Only visits that reach your site with the tag allowed to fire |
| Visits with no referrer | Not documented | Direct | Direct; no channel rule can recover them |
| Shopper declines cookies or blocks scripts | Orders still count | Orders count; the conversion summary may be limited | Depends on your consent setup; sessions can be missing or modelled |
| In-chat checkouts on Copilot, AI Mode, Gemini | Included in sales | Orders count as orders | Not counted; Shopify says GA4 doesn't fire there |
| History | Whatever date range you pick | Whatever date range you pick; sessions shift across Sept 21 to 23, 2026 | AI Assistant from Google's May 13, 2026 release; custom channel groups can be applied retroactively |
| Best used for | Is the channel growing at all? | Revenue of record and order-level evidence | Share of traffic, behaviour, conversion against the site |
The two gaps that matter most are consent and the Shop app. Shopify counts every order whatever the shopper's cookie choices, while GA4 only records what its tag was allowed to collect. And the Agentic page's cross-channel figures fold the Shop app in, so they will run above anything GA4 reports for AI.
Which number should I report?
Report revenue from Shopify and behaviour from GA4. Shopify's order data is the closest thing you have to a ledger: it counts the sale whatever happened to the tag. GA4 is better at the questions around the sale, such as what share of sessions came from AI, how those sessions engaged, and how their conversion rate compares with the rest of the site.
- 01
Fix the definition
Write down what counts as ChatGPT revenue: orders whose referrer is ChatGPT in Shopify, with the attribution model you use (Shopify's marketing reports offer last non-direct click, last click, first click, any click and linear).
- 02
Pull Shopify's number
At month end, record ChatGPT orders and sales from Shopify Analytics, and the ChatGPT figures from the Agentic page.
- 03
Pull GA4's number
Record ChatGPT sessions, purchases and purchase revenue from your custom AI channel, filtered to the ChatGPT source.
- 04
Write down the gap
Note the difference as a percentage. A stable gap is normal. A gap that suddenly widens usually means a tracking change: a consent banner update, a theme change, or a regex edit.
- 05
Keep the caveats on the page
State that Direct includes some AI visits nobody can identify, and that Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside Organic Search. AI Mode traffic hides in Organic Search explains why.
Once the number is stable, the next question is what it is worth. Does AI-referred traffic convert? covers what the published studies say and why you should trust your own conversion rate over any of them.
What about orders from Copilot, AI Mode and Gemini?
Those channels can close the sale in the chat. Shopify's help center says Microsoft Copilot's direct checkout is active by default for eligible stores, and that shoppers can click Buy inside Google AI Mode and Gemini. For both, it says Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire in the direct checkout. Only server-to-server pixels do, for checkout started and checkout completed. (Copilot Checkout is Microsoft's product, announced January 8, 2026.)
So for those channels, Shopify is the only complete count, and the Agentic page is where you find it. Keep in-chat orders on their own line in any report, and never add them to a GA4 total, which never saw them. The AI shopping channels guide maps where the sale closes on each channel, and turning off agentic storefronts covers the trade-off if measurement matters more to you than in-chat conversion.
How do I test that ChatGPT tracking works on my store?
Run this once after setup and again after any theme, consent or tracking change. It needs no test purchase.
- 01
Find your store in ChatGPT
Ask ChatGPT a shopper-style question your products should answer, and click through to one of your product pages. If your products don't appear, start with why Shopify products don't show in ChatGPT.
- 02
Read the landing URL
Before you browse, look at the address bar. Note whether the URL carries any utm parameters, and what they say.
- 03
Check GA4
In GA4, watch for your session in real time, and note its source, medium and channel. Repeat from ChatGPT's mobile app, since an in-app browser can behave differently from a desktop browser.
- 04
Check Shopify the next day
In Sessions by referrer, look for the ChatGPT referring channel on the day you tested.
- 05
Read recent orders
Open the conversion summary on your last 20 orders and count those with a ChatGPT referrer. Compare that with what GA4 attributed to ChatGPT over the same days.
The monthly AI-attributed revenue report explains how to read each of those rows and what to tell a CFO when the ChatGPT line is still small.
FAQ
Where can I see ChatGPT sales in Shopify?
- Go to Sales channels > Agentic and click ChatGPT in the main analytics section. The metric drop-down shows Sales, Orders, Online store sessions and Online store conversions for the date range you set. For order-level detail, open an order and read its conversion summary, which shows the referrer for each visit when Shopify has the data.
Do ChatGPT orders show up as a separate sales channel in Shopify?
- Shopify says orders from AI channels display in your admin with channel or referrer attribution, but it doesn't document which applies to ChatGPT. Because ChatGPT shoppers check out on your online store checkout, open one order you know came from ChatGPT and check its sales channel and referrer. Build your custom report on what you see there.
Does ChatGPT add utm_source to links?
- We couldn't confirm it from OpenAI's documentation: OpenAI's help center blocked automated access when we checked, and its developer pages we could open don't mention UTM parameters. Check your own data instead. Look at the UTM parameters in ChatGPT orders' conversion summaries and at GA4's source and medium for ChatGPT sessions. A regex on source catches ChatGPT either way.
Why does Shopify show more ChatGPT orders than GA4?
- Shopify counts every order, whatever the shopper's cookie choices, while GA4 records only what its tag was allowed to collect. Visits that lose their referrer land in Direct in GA4. And GA4 can't see in-chat checkouts on other channels at all. A stable gap is normal. Investigate a gap that suddenly widens.
Is the Shop app counted in Shopify's agentic storefronts numbers?
- Yes. Shopify's help center says sessions, referrals and sales from the Shop app are all included in agentic storefronts performance reporting. Separate it before comparing the Agentic page's cross-channel totals with GA4's AI numbers, or the Shopify figure will look inflated next to GA4's.
Does Google Analytics track purchases made through ChatGPT on Shopify?
- For ChatGPT, the shopper completes the purchase on your own online store checkout, so your normal GA4 setup applies, subject to consent. Shopify only documents that GA4 doesn't fire in the direct checkout inside Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini. Test ChatGPT yourself by clicking through from ChatGPT and checking the session in GA4.
Why did my Shopify session numbers change in late September 2026?
- Shopify rolled out a session measurement update from September 21 to 23, 2026. Sessions now follow continued customer activity instead of ending at midnight UTC, and identified bot sessions are filtered out of session reports by default. Sessions and conversion rates may shift across that date. Orders and sales are unaffected, so revenue comparisons still hold.
