FBA means Amazon stores, picks, packs, ships and handles customer service and returns for a per-unit fee; FBM means you do all of that yourself. Both pay the same referral fee, and Amazon's own guidance is that many sellers use both, product by product.
- 2026 FBA fees: a large standard item at $10 to $50 and 1.25 to 1.5 lb costs $5.42 to fulfill outside peak and $5.73 from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, plus a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge since April 17, 2026. Storage, inbound placement and low-inventory fees sit on top.
- Amazon says it doesn't use Prime eligibility or fulfillment method to pick the Featured Offer when all else is equal. It does weigh fast, free, specific delivery promises, which FBA delivers by default and FBM has to earn.
- In our worked example, a $29.99 kitchen item clears about $10.67 a unit before ads on FBA outside peak, $10.12 in peak, and $7.54 on FBM at our assumed shipping cost. FBM wins when your all-in cost per order beats roughly $6.82.
- FBM fits bulky, slow, fragile, customized or temperature-sensitive products and brands that need control of packaging. Seller Fulfilled Prime puts the Prime badge on self-fulfilled orders after a 30-day trial, if you can hit Amazon's speed requirements.
Short answer: use FBA for products that are small to mid-size, sell steadily and compete on delivery speed, because Amazon's fulfillment fee is usually lower than what a mid-market brand pays to ship one parcel itself, and FBA offers come with Prime. Use FBM for bulky, heavy, slow-moving, fragile or made-to-order products, for items FBA won't take, and when you need control of packaging and inventory. Most brands end up running both, chosen SKU by SKU from the numbers, not the label.
This guide is for Amazon sellers doing $100K to $10M a year and the agencies that run their accounts. Every fee below is a US rate from Amazon's Seller Central help pages and sell.amazon.com, read on October 23, 2026 and listed under Sources. Fees change every year, and Amazon already runs separate peak-season rates, so check the date on every number before you model with it.
- FBA vs FBM
- Two ways to fulfill Amazon orders. With Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), you send inventory to Amazon's fulfillment centers and Amazon picks, packs, ships, and handles customer service and returns for per-unit fees. With Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM), you store inventory and ship orders yourself or through your own 3PL. Seller Fulfilled Prime is an FBM program that adds the Prime badge to self-fulfilled offers.
What is the difference between FBA and FBM?
The difference is who holds the inventory and who owns the order after the click. With FBA, Amazon does the work and charges for it unit by unit. With FBM, you do the work and pay your own costs: warehouse space, packaging, labor and postage. Amazon's own comparison frames it as hands-off versus control, and says you can use one method for all eligible products or combine them.
| FBA | FBM | Seller Fulfilled Prime | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who stores and ships | Amazon | You or your 3PL | You or your 3PL |
| Prime badge | Yes, automatically on eligible products | No | Yes, after prequalifying and a 30-day trial |
| Post-order customer service and returns | Amazon | You (returns within 24 hours via Manage Returns) | Amazon handles post-order service and authorizes returns |
| Fees beyond referral | Fulfillment, storage, inbound placement, low-inventory and others | Your own shipping and handling costs | Your own costs; free delivery and free returns to Prime members |
| Packaging and inserts | Amazon's packaging | Your choice | Your choice |
| Inventory location | Amazon fulfillment centers | Anywhere you choose | Anywhere, if you meet the speed requirements |
Both pay the same selling plan fee ($39.99 a month on the Professional plan) and the same category referral fee. One detail tilts the math: Amazon's pricing page says the referral fee is charged on the item's total price, including shipping and gift-wrap charges. An FBM seller who charges $5.99 shipping on a 15% category pays about $0.90 in extra referral fee on that shipping charge.
What does FBA cost in 2026?
FBA charges a per-unit fulfillment fee plus several inventory fees. Amazon's 2026 fee summary said FBA fees would rise by an average of $0.08 per unit on January 15, 2026, with no new fee types in 2026. Since then Amazon has added a 3.5% fuel and logistics-related surcharge on fulfillment fees from April 17, 2026, and peak holiday rates that run from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027.
| Shipping weight | Non-peak (Jan 15 to Oct 14, 2026) | Peak (Oct 15, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 oz or less | $3.73 | $3.97 |
| 8+ to 12 oz | $4.20 | $4.48 |
| 1+ to 1.25 lb | $5.04 | $5.34 |
| 1.25+ to 1.5 lb | $5.42 | $5.73 |
| 1.75+ to 2 lb | $5.82 | $6.15 |
| 2.75+ to 3 lb | $6.67 | $7.08 |
| 3+ lb to 20 lb | $6.97 + $0.08 per 4 oz over 3 lb | $7.51 + $0.08 per 4 oz over 3 lb |
Price band matters: Amazon's fee table charges less for items under $10 (about $0.86 less on average) and more for items over $50. Shipping weight for large standard items is the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight, which Amazon calculates as length times width times height divided by 139. Small standard items use unit weight.
- Monthly storage. Amazon's storage fee page lists $0.78 per cubic foot for standard-size items from January to September and $2.40 from October to December ($0.56 and $1.40 for large bulky and extra-large). Professional sellers whose storage utilization ratio runs above 22 weeks pay a surcharge on top. The 2026 fee summary lists no change to these base rates.
- Inbound placement. Send inventory to one location (minimal splits) and pay per unit: $0.24 to $0.50 for a large standard item from 12 oz to 1.5 lb since January 15, 2026. Ship at least five identical cartons or pallets per item to the locations Amazon picks (Amazon-optimized splits) and pay nothing. Amazon charges it 45 days after receipt.
- Low-inventory-level fee. Charged per shipped unit when both your 30-day and 90-day historical days of supply fall below 28 days. For a large standard item up to 3 lb it's $0.97, $0.70 or $0.36 a unit depending on how low you ran.
- Aged inventory surcharge. From 2026, items aged 12 to 15 months pay at least $0.30 per unit a month (or $6.90 per cubic foot, whichever is greater), and items over 15 months pay $0.35 per unit or $7.90 per cubic foot.
Amazon gives new sellers several waivers: $400 in inbound placement credits if the first shipment goes out within 90 days of listing, no low-inventory-level fee for a new Professional seller's first 365 days (and for new-to-FBA parent products for 180 days under FBA New Selection), and no storage utilization surcharge for the first 365 days. They shrink year-one FBA costs; model year two without them.
What does FBM cost?
Amazon doesn't charge FBM sellers a fulfillment fee, so FBM cost is whatever your operation costs per order: postage, packaging, pick-and-pack labor, warehouse space or a 3PL's fees, and returns handling. Amazon publishes no average for it. What it does publish is help on the biggest line, postage: Amazon's FBM page says Amazon Buy Shipping rates are over 31% lower on average than retail ground rates for UPS, FedEx and USPS, and that Amazon refunds costs for claims when customers report packages that don't arrive.
FBM also carries obligations FBA sellers don't think about. You set handling and transit times, confirm shipment within your stated handling time, upload tracking, and respond to return requests within 24 hours through Manage Returns. Amazon automatically enrolls US FBM sellers in its prepaid returns label program and authorizes requests that meet its policy. Your late shipment, cancellation and valid tracking rates feed Account Health.
Is FBA or FBM cheaper for a $29.99 product?
Here is one SKU costed both ways. The product is a Home and Kitchen item at $29.99, packaged at 9 x 6 x 3 inches and 1.3 lb. Its dimensional weight is 1.17 lb, so the 1.3 lb unit weight sets the fee: large standard, 1.25 to 1.5 lb, $10 to $50 band. Amazon fees come from the pages cited above. Everything marked as an assumption is ours, chosen to be plausible for a US brand, and you should replace it with your own quotes.
| Line item | FBA, non-peak | FBA, peak | FBM | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selling price | $29.99 | $29.99 | $29.99 | Free shipping to the buyer in all three |
| Referral fee (15%) | $4.50 | $4.50 | $4.50 | Home and Kitchen, sell.amazon.com/pricing |
| Fulfillment fee + 3.5% surcharge | $5.61 | $5.93 | n/a | $5.42 / $5.73 rate card plus surcharge |
| Storage, 1.5 months on hand | $0.11 | $0.34 | n/a | 0.094 cu ft at $0.78 / $2.40; holding time is an assumption |
| Inbound placement | $0.50 | $0.50 | n/a | Top of the minimal-splits range; $0 with Amazon-optimized splits |
| Freight to Amazon | $0.60 | $0.60 | n/a | Assumption |
| Postage | n/a | n/a | $8.00 | Assumption: one ground parcel via Buy Shipping; varies by zone |
| Packaging, labor, own storage | n/a | n/a | $1.95 | Assumption: $0.50 packaging, $1.25 labor, $0.20 space |
| Product landed cost | $8.00 | $8.00 | $8.00 | Assumption |
| Contribution before ads | $10.67 | $10.12 | $7.54 | Price minus all rows above |
On these assumptions FBA earns about $3.13 more per unit outside peak and $2.58 more in peak. Flip it around and the useful number is the break-even: FBM wins on this SKU only if your all-in cost per order (postage, packaging, labor and space) comes in under about $6.82 outside peak, the total of the FBA fulfillment-side rows. A brand with a cheap regional 3PL rate, or mostly local buyers, can get there. A brand paying retail-style postage usually can't.
Three things move the answer more than anything else. A low-inventory month adds up to $0.97 a unit to FBA. A product that sits in a fulfillment center for six months instead of six weeks quadruples its storage line, before any utilization surcharge. And a heavier or bulkier item changes both sides at once, so rerun the table for each size tier you sell. Our landed cost walkthrough builds the product-cost row from factory price, freight and duty.
Cost FBA at peak rates and with one low-inventory month built in. If a SKU still beats FBM under those conditions, FBA is safe. If it only wins in a perfect off-peak month, it's an FBM or hybrid candidate. This is our planning method, not an Amazon benchmark.
Does FBA help you win the Buy Box and the Prime badge?
FBA gives you the Prime badge; it doesn't directly give you the Buy Box, which Amazon now calls the Featured Offer. Amazon's Becoming the Featured Offer page says that if all other factors are equal, offers with or without the Prime badge, and offers fulfilled by Amazon or by the merchant, are equally likely to be featured. Amazon says it ranks offers on total price, delivery promise, free shipping, free returns and seller performance.
In practice that still favors FBA, because FBA delivers the inputs Amazon weighs: free shipping, fast and specific delivery promises, and Amazon-handled returns. An FBM offer can match them, but only if you price shipping into the item, set tight handling times and hit them. Amazon also notes Prime members may see a different Featured Offer because of their faster free delivery options. Amazon's own pages aren't fully aligned here: its Seller Fulfilled Prime page says the Prime badge helps increase your likelihood of becoming the Featured Offer. The full ranking rules are in our Amazon Buy Box guide.
What is Seller Fulfilled Prime, and is it worth it?
Seller Fulfilled Prime (SFP) puts the Prime badge on offers you ship yourself. Amazon's SFP page sets out the path: a Professional account with a domestic US default shipping address, prequalification on package volume and late-shipment, valid-tracking and cancellation rates, then a 30-day trial in which you must meet all performance requirements. You get no Prime branding during the trial. Once enrolled, Amazon reviews performance weekly, Sunday to Saturday, and ongoing misses can lead to Prime offers being disabled.
- What you commit to. Fast and free delivery, plus free returns for domestic Prime customers. Amazon handles post-order customer service and automatically authorizes returns within the return window.
- What you keep. Your own storage, carriers, packaging and inserts, and a daily limit on how many same-, one- and two-day Prime orders customers can place.
- What Amazon doesn't publish publicly. The exact prequalification and trial thresholds; its public page points sellers to the trial registration page in Seller Central to check them.
SFP is worth it for brands with a strong US warehouse operation and products FBA handles poorly, such as oversize items, kits assembled to order or anything needing custom packaging. For a lean team without its own warehouse, keeping a weekly one- and two-day delivery record is the hard part, and FBA is usually the simpler way to the badge.
Which gives you more control: FBA or FBM?
FBM, clearly. You choose packaging and inserts, see and touch your stock, ship from wherever inventory sits, and talk to the customer after the order. Amazon's FBM page also points to selling heavy or bulky products, slow-moving inventory, or temperature-sensitive products that can't be sold through FBA. With FBA you give up packaging and post-order contact, and you take on Amazon's capacity limits, inbound rules and storage clock.
The control question also touches your other channels. FBA inventory can serve Shopify and other channels through Amazon's Multi-Channel Fulfillment, whose fees rose by an average of $0.30 per unit in 2026 according to Amazon's fee summary. FBM inventory in your own warehouse serves every channel by default. If Amazon is one channel among several, where your stock lives is a business decision as much as an Amazon one.
When should you choose FBA, and when FBM?
| Situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small, light item selling steadily | FBA | Fulfillment fee usually beats your postage; Prime and fast promises come built in |
| Bulky, heavy or oversize item | FBM or SFP | Bulky fees, placement fees and storage climb fast with size |
| Slow mover or long-tail SKU | FBM | Storage and aged-inventory fees run while it waits |
| Seasonal spike product | FBA, stocked ahead | Peak capacity, if you send enough to avoid low-inventory fees |
| Custom, personalized or kitted to order | FBM or SFP | FBA can't customize after receipt |
| Temperature-sensitive or restricted from FBA | FBM | Amazon's FBM page names these as FBM cases |
| Thin team, no warehouse | FBA | Amazon does storage, shipping, customer service and returns |
| Brand experience matters at unboxing | FBM or SFP | Your packaging and inserts |
Price point matters too. Under $10, FBA's Low-Price rates help, but a referral minimum and a fulfillment fee can still eat the margin. Over $50, FBA's higher rate card applies, and a careful FBM operation often has room to compete. If you also sell on Vendor Central, the fulfillment question changes again; see Seller Central vs Vendor Central.
Can you use FBA and FBM together?
Yes, and Amazon encourages it: its FBA vs FBM guide says many sellers use both on a per-product basis, and its Prime selling guide suggests FBM for bulky, lower-demand items with FBA for smaller, fast sellers. The common hybrid patterns we set up:
- Split by SKU. Fast, small sellers go to FBA; bulky, slow or custom items stay FBM. This is the cleanest version and the easiest to report on.
- FBM as backup. Keep a merchant-fulfilled offer ready so a listing stays buyable when FBA stock runs out or an inbound shipment is delayed. Amazon's low-inventory fee page says seller-fulfilled inventory isn't counted in historical days of supply, so a backup offer doesn't protect you from that fee.
- FBA for Amazon, your warehouse for everything else. Keep a lean FBA position and fulfill Shopify and wholesale from your own stock, or the reverse with Multi-Channel Fulfillment.
Whichever pattern you choose, measure Amazon profit after fulfillment and ads together, per SKU. TACOS, not ACoS explains why ad efficiency alone misleads, and the Amazon operator's guide covers the listing and ads work that has to sit on top of either fulfillment method.
How should you decide between FBA and FBM for your catalog?
- 01
Pull real dimensions and weights
Measure the packaged unit. Size tier and shipping weight decide the FBA fee, and a wrong measurement means a wrong fee.
- 02
Price both sides per SKU
Use Amazon's Revenue Calculator for the FBA side and your actual postage and 3PL quotes for FBM, in a table like the one above.
- 03
Stress-test FBA
Recost at peak rates, with one low-inventory month and your realistic months on hand. Check storage at October to December rates.
- 04
Check the delivery promise
If you'd go FBM, confirm you can offer free shipping and a tight, reliable promise; those feed the Featured Offer.
- 05
Assign and review quarterly
Put each SKU in FBA, FBM, SFP or hybrid, then review whenever Amazon changes fees; it gave at least 90 days' notice of its 2026 increases.
If you're shipping FBA inventory from overseas, the freight and prep steps before a unit is even received are in freight and customs for a first FBA shipment.

FAQ
Is FBA or FBM better for beginners?
- FBA is usually simpler for a new seller without a warehouse, because Amazon handles storage, shipping, customer service and returns, and new sellers get waivers such as $400 in inbound placement credits and a year without low-inventory or storage utilization surcharges. FBM is simpler if you already ship your own orders and sell bulky, slow-moving or custom products.
How much does FBA cost per unit in 2026?
- It depends on size, weight and price. A large standard item priced $10 to $50 and weighing 1.25 to 1.5 lb costs $5.42 to fulfill from January 15 to October 14, 2026 and $5.73 from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, plus a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge. Storage, inbound placement and any low-inventory fee are extra, and the referral fee applies to both FBA and FBM.
Does FBM hurt my chances of winning the Buy Box?
- Not by itself. Amazon says that when all other factors are equal, FBA and FBM offers, and offers with or without the Prime badge, are equally likely to become the Featured Offer. It does weigh total price, free shipping, fast and specific delivery promises, free returns and seller performance, so an FBM offer has to match FBA on those.
Can I get the Prime badge without FBA?
- Yes, through Seller Fulfilled Prime. You need a Professional account and a US default shipping address, must prequalify on package volume and late-shipment, valid-tracking and cancellation rates, and must pass a 30-day trial. Once enrolled you offer fast, free delivery and free returns to domestic Prime customers, and Amazon reviews your performance weekly.
Can I sell the same product with FBA and FBM?
- Amazon says many sellers use both methods and that you can combine them to fit your business. A common setup keeps fast sellers in FBA and bulky or slow items FBM, or keeps an FBM offer as backup when FBA stock runs out. A backup FBM offer doesn't count toward the days of supply Amazon uses for the low-inventory-level fee.
When are FBA peak fees in 2026?
- Amazon's holiday peak fulfillment fees apply from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027 for FBA, Multi-Channel Fulfillment and Buy with Prime. Amazon charges fulfillment fees when a unit ships, so an order placed before October 15 but shipped on or after it pays the peak rate. Monthly storage also rises to $2.40 per cubic foot for standard-size items from October to December.
