The Amazon Buy Box (Featured Offer) in 2026: How It's Chosen and Why It Disappears

Amazon Buy Box, now the Featured Offer: who's eligible since September 2026, what Amazon ranks, why it disappears and how to track it. Check your price floor.

Short answer

The Buy Box is what sellers call Amazon's Featured Offer: the offer with the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons in the Offer Display on a product page. Amazon picks it per variation, and shoppers in different locations or with Prime can see different winners.

  • Since September 2026, Amazon has no seller eligibility requirement: every seller's offers are evaluated. An individual offer still has to be in stock, shippable to the shopper and competitively priced to be featured.
  • Amazon says it ranks offers on total price (item plus shipping), delivery promise, free shipping, free returns and seller performance. It says it doesn't use reviews or star ratings, and that Prime eligibility and fulfillment method make no difference when everything else is equal.
  • A Buy Box disappears ("See options") when no offer qualifies: stock-outs, a price above the competitive external price or recent prices, a price so low Amazon suspects an error, or a Fair Pricing Policy action.
  • Track Featured Offer percentage in Business Reports, fix disqualified offers in Pricing Health, and automate with the SP-API's Featured Offer Expected Price. Amazon doesn't document how Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus) chooses which offer it buys.

Short answer: the Amazon Buy Box is the box on a product detail page with the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons, and Amazon's own name for the offer inside it is the Featured Offer. When several sellers offer the same product, Amazon ranks their offers and features the one it judges most attractive to the shopper, mainly on total price, delivery speed and certainty, free shipping and returns, and seller performance. Since September 2026, any seller's offer can be considered. If no offer qualifies, the box is replaced by a "See options" button and the page has no Featured Offer at all.

This guide is for Amazon sellers, brand owners and their agencies. It uses only what Amazon publishes in its Seller Central help, sell.amazon.com, its developer documentation and About Amazon, read on October 23, 2026 and listed under Sources. Amazon doesn't publish the weights behind its ranking, so anything about weighting below is marked as our observation, or as not documented.

Featured Offer (Buy Box)
The offer Amazon shows with Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons in the Offer Display near the top of a product detail page. Amazon selects it by evaluating all offers for the product, may rotate between the best offers when none is clearly ahead, and shows other offers in the "Other sellers on Amazon" box and the all-offers page. Sellers have long called it the Buy Box; Amazon's help pages call it the Featured Offer.

What is the Amazon Buy Box?

Amazon's Featured Offer guide describes the Offer Display, "sometimes called the Buy Box", as the area near the top of a product page that contains one or more Featured Offers, each shown with price, condition, shipping speed and free-shipping threshold. Shoppers who want something else, such as a used item or a different delivery speed, can open the other offers below.

Four details from Amazon's help pages shape how you should think about it:

  • It's chosen per variation. Each size or color is evaluated separately, so you can hold the Featured Offer on some variations and not others.
  • It varies by shopper. Shoppers in different shipping locations, or with Prime memberships that give them faster free shipping, may see different Featured Offers. So may shoppers who filter search by delivery date.
  • It can rotate. When no single offer is clearly more attractive, Amazon may rotate the Featured Offer among the best offers.
  • Others still show. Up to three more eligible offers appear in the Other Sellers on Amazon box, and the rest on the offer listing page.

Who is eligible for the Buy Box in 2026?

Every seller, as of September 2026. Amazon's Becoming the Featured Offer page says Amazon "no longer maintains a seller eligibility requirement, and offers from all sellers are now eligible to be evaluated for the Featured Offer." Amazon has also taken down its separate Featured Offer eligibility help page. Older guides that list account-level eligibility thresholds describe a rule that no longer exists.

Eligibility to be considered isn't the same as being featured. Amazon says an individual offer may not be selected if it isn't competitive, and that it won't feature any offer when none meets its customer experience requirements, even if the product has only one seller. The practical gates are per offer: the item must be in stock, it must be shippable to the shopper's address, and its price must pass Amazon's pricing checks.

Amazon says it ranks qualified offers on the factors customers care about most, ranks them the same way for every product, and never uses manual overrides. These are the factors it names, and what each means for you:

FactorWhat Amazon saysWhat you control
Total priceItem price plus shipping plays an important role; coupons and promotions can helpPrice, shipping charge, coupons, Automate Pricing rules
Delivered promiseFaster offers and a specific delivery date (not a range) are more likely to be featuredHandling time, inventory location, FBA or a tight FBM promise
Free shippingPreferred; a $40 offer with free shipping beats $35 plus $5 shippingFold shipping into price; avoid cart-level fees and unmet thresholds
Free returnsCustomers prefer them, especially for often-returned items such as apparelReturn settings, at account or product level
Seller performanceOrder volume (without disadvantaging smaller sellers), chargeback rate and Voice of the Customer complaintsFulfillment accuracy, listing accuracy, condition, authenticity
Stock and shippabilityAn out-of-stock or unshippable offer can't be featuredInventory levels and shipping templates
Featured Offer ranking factors as Amazon describes them on its Becoming the Featured Offer help page, October 23, 2026. Amazon publishes no weights.

The Voice of the Customer complaints Amazon lists are specific: damaged, defective or wrong items, inaccurate descriptions, missing parts, wrong size, condition or style not as expected, and expiration-date issues. Most trace back to the listing or the warehouse, not the price. Amazon's Voice of the Customer page rates each offer's customer experience health against similar offers, so it's the place to find the listing problems that cost you the box.

What doesn't affect the Buy Box?

Amazon is unusually explicit here. Its help page says it does not consider:

  • Customer reviews and star ratings. Seller performance is judged on the dimensions above, not on customer-submitted seller reviews or product star ratings.
  • Prime eligibility. If all other factors are equal, offers with or without the Prime badge are equally likely to be featured.
  • Fulfillment method. If all other factors are equal, FBA and FBM offers are equally likely to be featured.

Read the qualifier carefully: all other factors equal. FBA offers tend to carry free shipping, fast and specific delivery dates and Amazon-handled returns, which are factors Amazon does weigh. So in our observation FBA still wins the box more often, through those inputs rather than the label. Amazon's Seller Fulfilled Prime page adds to the confusion by saying the Prime badge "helps increase your likelihood of becoming the Featured Offer." We read that as the speed and free delivery the badge implies, not the badge itself. The cost side of that choice is in FBA vs FBM in 2026. Reviews still matter for conversion and for what Alexa for Shopping says about your product, covered in reviews as machine-readable evidence.

Why did my Amazon Buy Box disappear?

A product page without a Featured Offer shows a "See options" button instead of Add to Cart. That's the suppressed Buy Box. Amazon's Featured Offer guide gives three common reasons: the item ran out of stock, the price is too high, or the price is too low, in which case Amazon may make the offer ineligible and ask the seller to confirm a suspected pricing error. Amazon's pricing pages fill in the detail.

Price too high has two meanings. Amazon's Pricing Health page says an offer becomes ineligible when its total price (item plus shipping) is above the competitive external price, or significantly higher than recent prices on Amazon or elsewhere. The competitive price threshold is the lowest price plus shipping recently found at a reputable retailer outside Amazon, and Amazon says it can use the price of a product customers would consider equivalent, with near-identical attributes but a different or generic brand.

Common causes of a missing Featured Offer and where Amazon says to look, from its Featured Offer, Pricing Health and Fair Pricing Policy pages, October 23, 2026.

The reference prices Amazon checks against are listed in Pricing Health: the current Featured Offer price, the 60-day average selling price, the highest 14-day price shipped and sold by Amazon, the list price, the per-unit price of a smaller bundle, the typical price (the 90-day median buyers paid) and the 60-day average offer price. If you believe the competitive external price is out of date, Amazon now offers a self-service dispute through Get help and resources or Seller Assistant, which it says can resolve automatically in as little as 30 minutes.

The Fair Pricing Policy can do more than hide the box

Amazon's Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy says that when pricing harms customer trust, Amazon can remove the Featured Offer, remove the offer, suspend the ship option, or in serious or repeated cases suspend or terminate selling privileges. The named practices include misleading reference prices, prices significantly above recent prices, multipacks priced higher per unit than singles, and excessive shipping fees.

How do brand owners and resellers compete for the Buy Box?

On the same terms, as far as Amazon documents it. Amazon says it ranks offers the same way for every product and never manually overrides the result, and none of its Featured Offer pages give a brand owner priority over a reseller on the brand's own listing. If an authorized reseller offers a lower total price with an equal delivery promise, Amazon's rules favor the reseller. None of those pages mention Brand Registry as a Featured Offer factor either.

What a brand owner does control is the reference data Amazon prices against. Because the competitive price threshold looks at reputable retailers outside Amazon, a deep discount on your own site, or a lower price at a big-box retailer, can make every offer on your Amazon listing ineligible, yours included. Keeping external pricing coherent with Amazon pricing is a channel strategy decision, not a repricing trick. Brands that also sell on Vendor Central compete with Amazon Retail's own offer on the same page; Seller Central vs Vendor Central covers who controls price in each model.

Our rule of thumb

Before you cut price to win the box, check Pricing Health. In accounts we run, a missing Featured Offer more often traces to a reference price (an outside retailer, a recent higher Amazon price, a list price) than to a competing seller. Matching an outside price you can't see is cheaper to fix with a dispute or a channel conversation than with a permanent price cut. This is our working method, not an Amazon statistic.

How do you monitor your Buy Box percentage?

Amazon gives you the number and the tools. Your Featured Offer percentage is the page views in which your offer was featured divided by all page views for your products, counting active items only. Find it in Business Reports, in the Detail Page Sales and Traffic reports, where you can graph it by date. Day to day, the price and shipping column on Manage All Inventory shows whether each offer is currently featured.

  • Pricing Health. Lists offers deactivated for pricing errors, offers ineligible for the Featured Offer, and eligible offers priced within 5% of the Featured Offer price, with one-click fixes and a download of up to 50,000 opportunities.
  • Automate Pricing. Amazon's own repricing tool. Its predefined competitive rule matches the lower of the competitive external price and the Featured Offer price, inside the minimum and maximum you set.
  • SP-API. Amazon's Product Pricing API returns the Featured Offer Expected Price for up to 40 SKUs per call and a competitive summary with reference prices. The PRICING_HEALTH notification fires when an offer is disqualified, and ANY_OFFER_CHANGED fires when competing offers, the Featured Offer or external prices change.
  • AI assistants. Amazon's Selling Partner plugin, in beta for Amazon Quick and Claude, can answer "What price do I need to win the Featured Offer?" with the expected price for your SKUs, and proposes changes for your approval before acting.

Watch Featured Offer percentage alongside sales, not alone. A drop with steady sessions is an offer problem; a drop in sessions with a steady percentage is a traffic problem. Amazon's Search Query Performance report helps tell the two apart at the query level.

What does the Buy Box mean as Alexa for Shopping recommends products?

Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus), which Amazon launched on May 13, 2026 by combining Rufus and Alexa+, changes how shoppers reach a product page. Amazon's announcement says shoppers can ask questions in the main search bar, compare selected products side by side on features, prices and reviews, see up to a full year of price history on a product page, set price alerts, auto-buy items at a set price, and schedule routine purchases.

Amazon doesn't document how Alexa for Shopping picks which seller's offer to buy when it acts for a shopper, or whether it follows the Featured Offer. Treat any claim that it does as unverified. What we can say from the documented features:

  • Price history is now shopper-facing. A year of history on the product page makes short-term price spikes visible to the people deciding, as well as to Amazon's reference-price checks.
  • Comparisons happen across products, not just offers. The assistant compares your product with rivals on features, price and reviews, so winning the Featured Offer on your own listing doesn't help if the product loses the comparison.
  • A page with no Featured Offer is a weak recommendation. How the assistant treats a product showing "See options" isn't documented; a page with no Buy Now button is a poor place to send a shopper either way.

So the Buy Box and assistant visibility are two layers of one job: keep a buyable, competitive offer on the page, and make the listing the one the assistant can read and recommend. The listing side is in the Amazon operator's guide for Alexa for Shopping and the Rufus test for your own listing.

FAQ

What is the Buy Box on Amazon now called?

Amazon calls it the Featured Offer. The area that holds it is the Offer Display near the top of a product detail page, which Amazon says is sometimes called the Buy Box. The Featured Offer is the offer shown with Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons; other offers appear in the Other Sellers on Amazon box and on the all-offers page.

Do I need to meet requirements to be eligible for the Buy Box?

Not at the seller level any more. As of September 2026, Amazon says it no longer maintains a seller eligibility requirement and evaluates offers from all sellers. Each offer still needs to be in stock, shippable to the shopper and competitively priced, and Amazon won't feature any offer if none meets its customer experience requirements.

Why is there no Buy Box on my Amazon listing?

When no offer qualifies, Amazon shows a See options button instead. Common causes are being out of stock, a total price above the competitive external price or well above recent prices, a price low enough that Amazon suspects an error, or a Fair Pricing Policy action. Pricing Health in Seller Central shows which applies to your offer.

Does FBA guarantee the Buy Box?

No. Amazon says that when all other factors are equal, FBA and FBM offers, and offers with or without the Prime badge, are equally likely to become the Featured Offer. FBA helps indirectly because it brings free shipping, fast and specific delivery promises and Amazon-handled returns, which Amazon does weigh alongside total price and seller performance.

Do reviews affect who wins the Buy Box?

Amazon says it doesn't consider customer reviews or star ratings when selecting the Featured Offer. It evaluates seller performance through order volume, chargeback rate and Voice of the Customer complaints such as damaged, defective or wrong items. Reviews still affect conversion and what Alexa for Shopping tells shoppers about a product.

How do I check my Buy Box percentage?

In Seller Central, open Business Reports and the Detail Page Sales and Traffic reports, where Featured Offer percentage is page views with your offer featured divided by total page views for your products. Manage All Inventory shows whether each offer is currently featured, and the SP-API returns the Featured Offer Expected Price for up to 40 SKUs per call.
