What Your Free AI Citation Check Report Actually Shows
See what the free AI Citation Check report shows across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews — named, cited, or absent — and how to act. Run yours free.
The free AI Citation Check is a baseline report on whether major AI shopping surfaces already recommend — or ignore — your brand when a stranger asks category buying questions. You enter a brand name and three product categories. Within about 24 hours you get a report that shows, for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, whether you were named in the answer, cited as a source, or absent. It is not a ranking guarantee, a full Commerce GEO engagement, or a promise that any model will place you tomorrow. It answers one operator question: when shoppers ask AI what to buy in our categories, are we in the answer at all?
This is a GigaCommerce method how-to for Shopify and Amazon-adjacent brands in the $100K–$10M band who keep hearing that “GEO” and “AI visibility” matter and need a checkable artifact before they budget Commerce GEO. It sits next to the DIY AI citation audit guide — the Check is the fast, brand-specific starter panel; the audit guide is the deep, locked 15–30 question loop you run when you are ready to manage a trend.
Why a citation baseline beats another “are we in ChatGPT?” meeting
Most mid-market teams already suspect AI assistants influence discovery. The failure mode is not indifference — it is debate without shared evidence. Marketing screenshots one lucky ChatGPT answer that names the brand. Ops opens a fresh chat, asks a slightly different question, and gets a competitor list. Leadership asks which screenshot is “real.” Nobody agrees, so Commerce GEO work stalls or starts as vibe-driven content with no measurement.
Assistants are non-deterministic. The same buying question can return different brand lists an hour apart. That is why a single anecdotal chat is a weak decision tool, and why a structured check — even a short one — beats a hallway debate. The free Check collapses the argument into a dated baseline: on these three categories, on these three surfaces, here is how you showed up today.
Typical turnaround from a valid brand + three-category submission to the baseline AI Citation Check report
GigaCommerce AI Citation Check product page (/tools/ai-citation-check)
Treat that report as a starting ledger, not a scoreboard to defend in a QBR. The sister article on what “good” citation rates look like explains bands: a newer brand in a crowded category scoring thin on a starter panel is often on-track, while a decade-old category leader missing everywhere has a structural problem. The Check’s job is to put your brand on that map without an afternoon of manual panel runs.
What we ask for — and what the Check is not measuring
Intake is deliberately narrow: brand name, three product categories you actually sell, and a contact email. We need categories phrased the way shoppers ask — “wool sneakers,” “fragrance-free niacinamide serum,” “Queen mattress protectors” — not internal SKU codes or marketing slogans. The Check runs against public answer surfaces an ordinary shopper can reach; it does not log into your Shopify admin or Seller Central.
In scope
- Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews name your brand or products for category-style buying questions tied to the three categories you submit
- Whether your site (or a clear product page) appears among cited sources when the surface shows sources
- A baseline credibility signal you can share internally before you buy a full GEO engagement
Out of scope (on purpose)
- A guarantee of any future citation — nobody honest can promise ChatGPT, Perplexity, or AI Overviews placement
- A full 15–30 question locked panel across four assistants with multi-run scoring (that is the citation audit)
- Amazon Rufus listing-answer quality as a primary grade — Rufus is a related commerce surface, but this free Check is built around the off-site assistant / Overview trio named on the tool page
- An Agentic Commerce Readiness Score of your Shopify storefront — readiness (can agents read and sell from your site?) is a different measurement; run that separately at /tools/agentic-readiness-score/
Baseline, not benchmark
The product page is explicit: the Check is a credibility signal so you know whether to engage, not a full citation-rate benchmark. If you need quarterly movement reporting across a locked panel, that is Commerce GEO delivery — the free report is the door, not the whole house.
How the report scores each answer (named, cited, absent)
The reading frame matches the audit method we publish publicly. Keep three levels; resist inventing a ten-point vanity scale for a free starter check.
| Result | What you saw | What it usually means | | --- | --- | --- | | Named | The assistant recommends your brand or product by name in the answer body | You hold recommendation surface for that question — protect it with accurate catalog facts and corroboration | | Cited | Your site appears in sources or links, but the spoken recommendation skips you | Retrieval can find you; recommendation ranking or corroboration is weak | | Absent | Neither the answer nor the sources mention you | Structural gap: thin structured facts, weak quotable content, poor corroboration, or the wrong category framing |
A brand that is cited but not named is in a different situation than a brand that is absent everywhere. The first often needs stronger comparison content, third-party corroboration, and clearer entity consistency. The second often needs the floor work first — product schema, attribute coverage, pages that answer the buying question in machine-readable form — before more “AI SEO” blog posts. That sequencing is why the Check pairs naturally with what a schema audit actually finds and with catalog enrichment when the catalog itself cannot support a confident recommendation.

Per-assistant pattern matters more than one blended score
Do not average ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews into one “AI visibility index” and stop thinking. A brand named on Perplexity but absent on ChatGPT and Overviews has a different next sprint than a brand absent on all three. Perplexity’s visible source list often tells you which URLs the answer leaned on. ChatGPT may name from memory or browse depending on mode. AI Overviews lean heavily on what Google’s index and answer layer already trust. The pattern across surfaces is the diagnosis; a single blended percentage hides it.
What arrives in the report — and how to read it in thirty minutes
Turnaround is about 24 hours after a valid submission. Delivery is a baseline report, not a 40-page strategy deck. Expect outcomes tied to the three categories you named and the three surfaces above — with enough evidence that you can attempt to reproduce a finding in a clean chat session yourself.
How to judge the report (do not “feel impressed”)
- 1Reproducibility. Open a fresh session (memory off where possible) and ask a buying question in the same category. You will not get a pixel-identical answer every time — assistants vary — but you should see the same pattern the report describes: named, cited, or absent relative to known competitors.
- 2Competitor clarity. Note who wins when you lose. If the same two brands take every head-term question, your near-term GEO content and corroboration work should address that competitive set, not a generic “be more visible” brief.
- 3Category honesty. If you submitted three categories but revenue is 80% in one, overweight the results for that one. A win in a side category does not cancel absence in the category that pays rent.
- 4Sequencing. Absent everywhere usually means fix structured product facts and schema before you commission a dozen thought-leadership posts. Named on one surface only usually means deepen quotable, corroborated coverage for the surfaces you miss — see how products get recommended by AI.
- 5No guarantee theater. If a vendor (anyone) reads your report and promises “you will be in ChatGPT by day 30,” treat that as a red flag. Promise the work, the measurement loop, and the iteration — never a specific citation outcome.
- 1
Submit brand + three real categories
Use shopper language, not internal taxonomy codes. Pick categories where you actually compete for recommendation.
- 2
Read per-assistant outcomes before any overall vibe
Map named / cited / absent for each surface. Write down who wins when you lose.
- 3
Assign one highest-leverage fix
Catalog/schema floor, quotable buying-guide content, or corroboration — pick the one the pattern points to, not all three at once.
- 4
Re-check after the fix ships
A second Check (or a short manual panel) only means something if something changed. Do not re-spam the form weekly with identical inputs and no work in between.
How Check results map to real work (and what they do not buy)
- Absent on head-term questions, thin PDPs → Enrich hero SKUs and lock attribute fields via Catalog Enrichment; then fix Product/Offer schema so crawlers and assistants can trust price, availability, and identity.
- Cited but rarely named → Strengthen quotable comparison and use-case content; tighten entity consistency (same brand name, same product names, same claims across site and third parties).
- Strong on Perplexity, weak on Overviews → Treat Google-facing structured data, indexable HTML facts, and corroboration as the priority lane — not another generic “ChatGPT optimization” checklist.
- Strong readiness, weak citations → You may already pass an Agentic Commerce Readiness Score and still fail citation panels. Readiness says agents can sell from your store; citation says off-site assistants choose to name you. Run both; do not substitute one for the other.
The Check is a diagnostic. Implementation still follows scoped work — Commerce GEO for the measurement-and-fix loop, catalog enrichment when the data floor is the blocker. Use the free report to decide whether and where to engage, not as a substitute for shipping the fixes.
Do not “content-blast” your way out of a structural miss
Publishing ten AI-flavored blog posts will not fix empty material, fit, or compatibility fields on the SKUs assistants would need to recommend. If the report shows absence on use-case and spec questions, fix the catalog and schema floor first.
Who should run the Check this week
- Brands that have never systematically asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, or AI Overviews category questions without putting their own brand name in the prompt
- Teams arguing from contradictory screenshots who need a shared, dated baseline before budgeting GEO
- Operators who already ran a schema or readiness pass and want the separate outcome question: are we cited?
- Agencies pitching Commerce GEO who need the prospect’s own absence/presence evidence on a slide, not a category average
If you already run a locked 15–30 question panel monthly, you may not need the free starter Check — keep your panel. If you have never measured at all, three categories and 24 hours is the cheapest way to stop guessing.

Frequently asked questions
Is the AI Citation Check really free?
- Yes. The Check is free, the baseline report is free, and there is no mandatory follow-up call required to receive it. You can read the report, ship fixes yourself, and stop. A scope conversation is optional if you want help with Commerce GEO delivery.
How is this different from the full AI citation audit?
- The [audit guide](/insights/commerce-geo/ai-citation-audit-guide) is the deep method: a locked panel of 15–30 buying questions, multi-run scoring across assistants, and a gap log you maintain as a trend. The free Check is a starter credibility signal on three categories and three surfaces so you know whether you have a problem worth a full audit or engagement.
Can GigaCommerce guarantee a ChatGPT or Perplexity citation?
- No. Answer engines are non-deterministic. Nobody can honestly guarantee placement. The Check shows where you stand today so GEO work has a measured starting point; engagements promise the work, the measurement, and the iteration loop — not a specific citation outcome.
Does a strong Check result mean we can skip catalog enrichment?
- Not necessarily. Citation can look decent on broad brand questions while use-case and compatibility questions still fail because attributes are thin. If assistants name you but refuse (or invent) specs, fix the structured catalog — the same floor Brand Agents need.
How often should we re-run the Check?
- After you ship a meaningful fix (schema + hero attribute coverage, major quotable content, or corroboration work), and on a lighter quarterly cadence otherwise. Re-running weekly with no changes mostly measures assistant noise, not your progress.
